Lupus is a disease that may have active and quiet (remission) periods. The active periods, sometimes called "flares" or "relapses," are when you have symptoms of lupus. A remission period is when you have few or no symptoms of the disease. A remission may last months or years, or you may not have remission periods at all.
Some of the medicine used to treat lupus may decrease your symptoms but cause other problems. Ask your caregivers about side effects to watch for when taking your lupus medications.

*Other treatments may include learning ways to exercise and control stress. Rest, avoiding infection, and early treatment of flare-ups are very important for people who have lupus. It is also important to protect yourself from the sun, eat healthy, and control other illnesses you may have.

Risks: There is no cure for lupus. Most people with lupus live long, productive lives. However, lupus makes some people so tired that they cannot work at times. Your chance of having a seriou s infection is increased because of lupus. Lupus can cause problems such as vision loss, heart disease, kidney failure, and stroke. Lupus can be life-threatening. Call your caregiver if you are worried or have questions about your medicine or care.

I've never seen any proof or indication that vitamins will influence lupus in any way but I'm sure it will be easy to find people claiming all sorts of benefits to whatever supplement they happen to be selling.

Yes, many of the drugs used to treat lupus aren't what I consider pleasant to take (prednisone) but if you don't currently have any organ damage I would encourage you to continue seeing your rheumatologist regularly at least for frequent testing so that you don't finally go in for testing someday and find out the damage is done and you no longer have any choices other than trying to salvage kidney or organ function.

Plaquenil is often used for early lupus and this medicine doesn't have a bad side effect profile so ask if this might be helpful.

Also, make sure your lupus diagnosis is definite and not just a bunch of symptoms labeled as lupus by someone not truly qualified to make a final diagnosis.
Mix dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), yellowdock (Rumex crispus), echinacea (Echinacea purpurea), and garlic (Allium sativum) equal parts in a tea, 1 cup three times daily. Herbs may be useful for treating lupus, as well as secondary symptoms, such as depression and insomnia.

Homeopathy

An experienced homeopath can prescribe a regimen for treating lupus that is designed especially for you. Some of the most common acute remedies are listed below.

Arsenicum album for restless exhaustion
Calcarea carbonica for overworked, overwhelmed people with poor stamina and low back pain
Nux vomica for irritability with constipation and sharp, cramp-like pains
Tuberculinum for repeated chest infections and joint pain with swollen glands
Acute dose is three to five pellets of 12X to 30C every one to four hours until symptoms are relieved.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture may help balance immune response during remissions, and alleviate flare-ups.
