I have a question about lupus? |
my 17 year old daughter has lupus and she has just recently started putting out protein through her urine her dr. has said it is a symptom of lupus but we shouldn't have to worry about it for about3 or 4 more years when i question her on this she says right now we need to focus on the most serious of her problems such as her heart its really frustrating and i can't just change doctors because its hard to find a new 1 that will take her with all of her pre-existing problems. does any one know any thing about this and thanks in advance As I'm sure the doctor explained to you, Lupus is an autoimmune disease, so her immune system is attacking her own body. It can be pretty tough. The urine protein is likely to be due to nephritis from the lupus. There's some heavy biological concepts involved, but to put it into plain English, she has antibodies against her own kidneys, which is causing damage to some of the kidney cells. If it just started, it doesn't have to be your highest priority yet, kidneys are pretty resilient. There are medications, including cyclosporin, that can slow down or stop the kidney damage, which would be indicated unless they would interact with her heart medications. If the doctor is more concerned about stabilizing other systems first, I would agree with her that this one can wait. My biggest concern is that the doctor isn't fully explaining these decisions to you and your daughter. I think you need to have a talk with her about that. Patients who are left in the dark like that naturally get scared and frustrated. Micro-clotting from Antiphospholipid Syndrome can cause this as well as heart conditions. This Auto immune disease can be a part of Lupus, or it can be without Lupus. I do have some small amounts of protein in my urine recently. Please get her tested for this through blood tests. The doctor needs to do a 24 hour urinalysis with creatin clearance. This will give a better picture of how the kidneys are functioning. I have lupus kidney disease. Lupus kidney disease has no physical symptoms until it is serious. That is why she should do a 24 hour urine now. I do wish you the best. Try looking for natural things to help her. I know that people always recommend meds but even the meds have side effects that make other things worse. I have fibromyalgia, with is by fat not as bad as lupus, but some symptoms mimic lupus.
