What is the difference between LUPUS and FIBROMYALGIA? |
I know they both fall in the arthritis category according to an article I read in Ann Landers recently. Ann needs to wake up and learn to check her facts if she actually wrote that. Fibromyalgia is a neurological disorder of hypersensitivity. Recent research points to a genetic weakness that makes some people susceptible to developing FMS or other pain syndromes like TMJ/TMD under the right conditions. There are several diseases called "lupus." Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease. It is also one of the diseases that should be ruled out before a diagnoses of fibromyalgia is made. I have fibro and it's a pain in the you know what. If the weather changes, my muscels change right along with it. I have a friend who has lupus and has some of the same symptoms. So, the best thing to do is get a blood test. That is the only way to rule out lupus. Fibro has 18 points on the body that hurt severly when light pressure is applied and that is how it's diagnoised. Lupus and fibromyalgia may look similar on the surface, but in fact they are very different disorders. Unlike lupus, fibromyalgia is not an autoimmune disorder and does not cause any inflammation. It also does not interfere with organ function. However, people with fibromyalgia are often misdiagnosed with lupus. The confusion between lupus and fibromyalgia may be due to the fact that many of their symptoms are so similar. Like fibromyalgia, lupus symptoms tend to come and go, and can take the form of sudden flare-ups. Like fibromyalgia, lupus is also associated with extreme fatigue, muscle pain, and circulatory disorders. In fact, up to 30% of lupus sufferers develop fibromyalgia syndrome after they have been diagnosed. However, it is very rare for fibromyalgia sufferers to develop lupus. It is important that you make sure that your health care provider diagnoses you correctly. Many fibromyalgia sufferers who have been diagnosed with lupus have received treatment that has provided them with little or no pain relief and which has instead only complicated their condition. Likewise, if you do have lupus, ask your health care provider to check you out for fibromyalgia, so that you can begin to treat those symptoms effectively too. Fibromyalgia is not very well understood, but it is characterized by nerve pain (kinda like when your foot goes to sleep and wakes up it feels like needles poking you- only way worse pain). My mom has lupus also. It doesn't seem to be as severe but all I really know about it is that it is an immune system disorder. My mom tends to have a really hard time getting over litt...
