Usually they will try Plaquenil (anti-malarial drug), Prednisone (steroid) or Methotrexate (chemotherapy drug). They may also try some sort of anti-inflammatory like Relafen.

You need to talk to your doctor about different medications you can try. Or maybe just go to another doctor alltogether. Try to find a really good doctor in your area.

Usually the first several years of the disease tend to be the worst since it becomes very active. It is a chronic condition that is lifelong, but after getting you regulated on some medication, it should hopefully calm down some.

I know this may not sound good, but if you are taking the pill form of methotrexate, see if you can do the injectable form instead. Since it doesn't go through your digestive system, it doesn't give you the gastrointestinal side effects. It would still be once a week, but just an injection you give yourself. Short needle. After a few times, you get used to it.

You would probably have to go to a pharmacy that "compounds" medications so that you could get the injectable form, since there has been a shortage of it being shipped as a liquid from overseas.

But best advice is to talk to your doctor, or maybe find a better doctor, and just hang in there! Source(s): Me - fellow autoimmune sufferer
See site below that according to U.S. Dept of Agriculture has phytochemicals that help with lupus plus other health problems.
