What is the average life span of someone with lupus? |
i was diagnosed 10 years ago with RA but found out 2 days ago that i tested neg for ra and positive for lupus. i am in constant pain and always tired.i am a single mom what can i expect? how long will i live? I have been living with Lupus for 15 years. There is no cure (yet) but lifestyle changes are important! I ran a Lupus Support group for 3 years and it affected each individual different. There is no "average life span" of a Lupus patient. If the doctors tell you that you have a certain amount of time left don't listen! They told me that I would not live through the night and that was in 1992. If you have joint pain and fatigue then it is "mild" opposed to organ involvement which is severe. Don't start worrying about dying but rather just live life. None of us knows when we are leaving this earth (whether we have an illness or not) and it is only up to God when we do. Stay out of the sun, avoid stress as much as possible, try to stay away from chemicals in food and products you use on your body and learn to listen to your body. When you need to rest do it. You can live until you are 90 just like everyone else. Don't believe in quick fixes or a magic pill because there are a lot of people out there claiming they have that one cure for you and it is basically to fill their pocket full of money. Work with a doctor that will listen to you because it is your body and surround yourself with supportive people because even though you look completely fine sometimes you won't feel that way and it is good to have people that understand. Try and find a Lupus support group in your area. God Bless You. It depends on when it is diagnosed and how bad it is. 48 hours. or you could ask your doctor what to expect and he might give you more time than that. My mom has Lupus also. She first had symptoms about 20 years ago when my brother and I were young. She was a single mother also. At the time no one knew what was wrong with her because Lupus was not well known about then. It is still one of those diseases that is not well known however doctors are finding out more and more all the time. She really doesn't seem like someone with a disease. It really depends on the severity of the disease. My mom tries to rest every afternoon for at least 20 minutes to an hour. You (as someone with Lupus) should limit your exposure to the sun. My mom gets very sick when she is outside in the sun for long periods of time - especially when the sun is very bright (it doesn't matter how warm it is out, it can even be winter.) My mother's blood tests for Lupus come back negative sometimes and positive other times. I'm not sure why this is but she takes precautions at all times. I think the lifespan for someone with Lupus really depends on how well you take care of yourself. As a single mother I can imagine how hard it must be to find anytime for yourself but I really think that you should try and find at least a little time in the afternoon or early evening when you can lay down and rest for at least a short period of time. If this means hiring a sitter so be it! Even laying on the couch watching cartoons with your kids is better than risking your life. Take it easy, with Lupus its really important! My mother also says she can feel when she needs to rest, and when she doesn't she gets very sick. When you need to rest, rest. And let your employer know this so that if it is an issue at work it can be resolved with a short break of somekind.
