Can a woman get pregnant when she has systemic lupus? |
Can a woman get pregnant when she has systemic lupus? Yes you can get pregnant with SLE. However there are many many more risks. First a woman with SLE must be tested for Antiophosopolipid Syndrome, a disease that is found in over 50% of SLE patients. This disease makes the blood clot and causes DVT which significantly increases the chance for stroke and embolisims. If this isn't present a pregnancy with SLE is still high risk. The baby will most likely be born premature and there is a much higher risk for late term spontaneous abortion or still birth. A premature baby can have Cerebal Palsey and other issues due to it's gestation period. With all of this said as long as you know the risks and you've talked with your doctor (a specialist treating high risk pregnancies) many many women with SLE deliver healthy babies and do not see a significant increase in Lupus flare ups.
