How do you keep a job when you have Lupus? |
I am off sick at the moment and the local council I work for has a strict sickness policy. When I get back to work I will have a final warning against me and could loose my job. I have appealed against the warnings in the past, but have been told that unless I am actually dying! the warnings stand.Lupus and arithitis is not recognised by them as a chronic long term condition. I am on my own and need to work to pay the bills! I can't work because of lupus, and know of many others also in this position, so may may have to accept that you can no longer do what you used to and try to get what ever financial help is available (eg social secuirty benefits, occupational ill-health pension). Some people with lupus can manage with reduced hours or a less stressfull job so it may be worth trying to see if your employer can do anything to support keeping you in work/find you alternative job. The stress you are currently under is the last thing you need when you have lupus, as stress makes lupus symptoms worse. The council should recognise lupus as a chronic long term condition, but you may need your doctors support. Your MP may also be able to help as UK parliament accepts lupus as a serious health condition. You may find the support and info available from the charity Lupus UK useful to you and in helping educate your employer about lupus. I joined as a member and they are a big help, the main web site is http://www.lupusuk.com/sitemap.asp... Also one of the local groups have a good site for message boards/ chat to others who have been in a similar position:- http://www.uklupus.co.uk/facts.html... I personally went through a lot of hassel and anguish in coming to terms with my condition and having to deal with occupational health at the same time, but in the end things did work out for me. For me it was all about accepting that my life would have to be very different. I lost my job so I have less money but I have enough to survive and my lupus symptoms are more stable now that I have time to rest/pace my activities and no longer have the stress of work. Good luck in getting everything sorted out Source(s): personal experience Find a less stressful job, they can't fire you for having Lupus that would be wrongful termination. They need to understand what Lupus is, so maybe they wont put so much stress on you. Hon, please find a less stressful job, get a doctors note and show them how this effects you. best of luck :) I went mad years ago, then I bought the company! It's very hard. I had acute onset lupus at age 51 and was fired from both my jobs. After 4 years I have managed to return to work but it is still a struggle every day. I am also on my own. You may have to take a really hard look at your work situation and expenses and try to find a solution that involves lowering expenses any way you can and finding work that you can handle. I am sorry you are going through this. I would get lupus properly diagnosed as it can be a symptom of lyme disease. You can find the details below. www.breakspearmedical.com www.lymediseaseaction.org.uk |
