Is 10mg of prednisone a lot if you have lupus?

I was diagnosed with SLE recently and Im on 10mg of prednisone, and I was curious to know if that was a lot. Does 10mg indicated that my lupus is severe?

No, my daughter is currently on 40 mg of prednisone because she has been getting high fevers for almost a month now due to her Lupus.

10 mg. is a low dose and usually given just to suppress the immune system mildly to prevent it from attacking your healthy body tissue. You are probably not having much symptoms (thank God) Just try not to eat too much fatty foods. Prednisone can make u eat alot more than usual and retain water.

Also, if you are going to be on the steroid for a long time, discuss getting bone density scans yearly with your doctor. Source(s): My own experience with my 13 year old daughter.
If it's what your doctor prescribed, then it's not a lot FOR YOU. That's the sole criterion.
There are many different medications you can be put on to keep your "flare ups" to a minimum. My doctor prescribes prednisone during my "flare ups" only. The rest of the time I take Plaquenil and Celebrex. There are other medications that you can take as well. It depends on the severity of your SLE. You can check out the website www.medicinenet.com. They have a great article on lupus. Also check out the Lupus Foundation of America website at www.lupus.org. Both sites were a tremendous help to me answering many questions that I have had over the years.
I have been on as high as 40 mg when I was first diagnosed, and it was really hard getting weaned off of it. Make sure you watch out for the side effects, get your bone scans and lab work done. The important thing to remember is that lupus is not the same for everyone, only you and your doctor can determine the right treatment for you. There is no one indicator of the severity of lupus.
