Physical Therapist Assistant or Occupational Therapist Assistant for someone with SLE (Systemic Lupus)...?

I have always wanted to work in the healthcare field, but have had some limitations due to my health. I have lupus and I am taking immunosuppressants. I am considering either a PTA or OTA program. I had heard that working as a PTA involves would care. Is this true? I appreciate any advice.

It really depends on your facility. We did a lot of wound care in the past...whirlpool, pulse lavage, etc...yet the research has shown how ineffective these procedures are for most wounds. We still apply multilayer bandaging systems such as PROFORE...yet, most wound care has gone by the wayside to wound care clinics with doctors and nurses who specize in this treatment utilizing enzymatic medications, hyperbaric oxygen and "wound vacs." OT, especially hand therapists, still tend to see a lot of patients for specialized wound care related to burns or recent hand injuries or surgeries...but PT is starting to get out of wound care due to the above reasons.

Both careers can potentially expose you to people with resistant infections such as MRSA, VRE and c-diff...especially if you work in an inpatient setting. Even if you do not plan to go into the inpatient setting (which also involves a lot of heavy lifting), you will most likely need to complete a rotation in these areas.

Take this into consideration before deciding on either of these careers. You should also talk with your physician regarding your risk of infection from completing wound care and working with so many people with active infecitons as these are prevalent in both careers. Source(s): PT
Be certain the lupus diagnosis is correct. Celiac disease is often misdiagnosed as lupus.
