Can Lupus cause Multiple Sclerosis?

Just wondering if that is possible. I was diagnosed with Lupus about a year ago, and I am having alot of symptoms like eye pain, muscle weakness, confusion, dizziness, etc. which are seen in MS patients so I was just wondering what someone else thought. Thanks!

well you can have both but it is rare. however, Lupus can attack the central nervous system, mine does, and I have a lot of MS features, the differance is in MS the mylan sheath gets destroyed in your brain and spine, in Lupus it does not. however, the eye pain, confusion, dizziiness, weakneess falling are features of both. Ive been tested for MS 3 times, during my course with Lupus, but its not there. So they consider my Lupus mainly Central Nervous System Involved. which includes seizures, migranes, and all mentioned above, and falls. Source(s): personal experience, though possible to have both, and if you have one autoimmune you are more likely to end up with more, lupus and ms usually do not happen together.
also a research and own an autoimmune support group
not likely............Lupis (wolf) is a largely still unknown about disease.

It may turn out to be related if ever solved.
While Lupus and MS are similar diseases, it's not likely that Lupus can cause MS.

Although, we don't know exactly what it is that causes MS, we have a pretty good idea. Lupus is not in that list.
I Agree that it possible to have both though rare. Have you been tested for ANtiphospholipid Syndrome? I have this and probable Lupus, but I have more MS-like symptoms. This disease can be associated with Lupus and is MS -like. I am including a couple of links. Best wishes

I Live with this disease- Feel free to email me if you have questions
Lupus and multiple sclerosis are both autoimmune diseases. In lupus the immune system can attack virtually any organ or system. In multiple sclerosis, the immune system attacks the myelin sheat on the nerve pathways. Lupus does not cause MS but they are sometimes seen in overlap.

The only way to tell is to see a neurologist. Lupus can affect the central nervous system which would cause the symptoms you are experiencing. It takes neurological testing to differentiate between lupus and ms.

Most of us lupus people get lupus fog-congitive problems. Dizziness could also be a result of anemia (common in lupus) or blood sugar problems or your medications. If you are taking plaquenil get your eyes checked NOW please. Talk to your rheumatologist about these issues.
