Are ulcers a symptom of Lupus? |
My cousin thinks she might have lupus, but i seem to think she's a bit of a hypochondriac. But she does have a huge problem with getting ulcers on her tongue. She can't eat cherries, pineapples, oranges, or even have to much spice in her food. I mean the entire sides of her tongue or covered in ulcers at least once a week. She does not have health insurance, so what's the next best thing besides a doctor? Why Yahoo Answers of course! Many people with Lupus get mouth ulcers and can get dry mouths due to damage to the salivary gland (especially true if Sjogrens syndrome accompanies the SLE) A dry mouth can also make you more prone to gum disease and Candida infections in the mouth. There was an article in the "News and Views" magazine produced by the charity Lupus UK last year which said that smoking, alcohol, citrus drinks, hot spicy and over salted foods, and toothpastes containing the foaming agent lauryl sulphate should be avoided as these can all make symptoms worse. In UK SLE patients can obtain the "biotene" range of toothpaste, dry mouth gel, and mouth wash on prescription (I can recommend these products as I had ulcers due to my lupus until I started using the biotene stuff for my dry mouth) Lupus UK have a good web site with loads of info that should be of use to your cousin http://www.lupusuk.com/sitemap.asp... There is also a good site for posting lupus related questions at http://www.thelupussite.com/forum/... If your cousin really does have Lupus she does need to see a doctor as without treatment lupus can be fatal but with correct medical intervention most people with lupus can have a relatively normal life. they call lupus a dease of a thousand faces because it is different for every one it can be as minor as a face rash (called buttyfly)because of the shape it does get worse if you are in the sun. you can get diabetes joint pain kidney problems and heart it goes on and on there seems to be three levels of it from very minor (just a rash on the face) to the pain in the butt kind your life is very affected but it is controllable as long as you stay on top of things then there is the very aggessive and it goes after the kidneys and heart and they die with in a couple of years For lupus there is a blood test some dr's say to get it and some don't they test for one thing in the blood but it is tricky because if it is not present in the blood it does mean you do not have lupus but if it is in your blood it does not mean you do have lupus So some Dr's wait and see what else is wrong but just because she gets ulcers in her mouth does not mean she has lupus I had them all of the time I suffered from them for 14 years until I went to Eroupe and I saw a Dr. there and he told me to do the following make chamille tea one tea bag/one cup of boiling water let it set with the tea bag in it until it cools to room temp rinse your mouth with it several times a day the tea you are not going to use with in a couple of hours keep in the fridge it will go bad very quickly rinse with the tea for 30 sec's and then sip it out This tea works for almost any mouth sore personal experence (grand daughter died of lupus) in health care feild Mouth ulcers can occur in lupus. Please don't label her as a hypochondriac. Lupus patients go through that all the time. The nature of lupus is that the symptoms come and go and change over time. Other things may also becausing the mouth ulcers. She needs to see a rheumatologist, health insurance or not. 4 years ago lupus put me in the hospital on the verge of death. I had bone marrow failure, pancytopenia anemia, pericarditis, pleurisy, pleural effusions and 4,400 mg protein in the urine, indicating some serious lupus kidney disease. The bill was over $100,000. So is it better to find some money, get diagnosed and treated or to go what I went through? Yahoo Answers is not going to help. Lupus or any other autoimmnue disease are not things to fool around with. www.lupus.org That is a symptom and diagnostic critera for lupus, but alone, not lupus. she needs to meet at least four of 11 critera. she can really only rince with a bit of salt and warm water, without insurance. I get them, and wait for them to pass. another problem can be her dental hygine. if she has no other problems... joint pain, muscle pain, feveres, organ involvment, rashes on body, or other issues. w/o insurance, its hard to sayu, except she can go to a county er if she is so worried, and apply for county aid, and maybe the bill will be picked up. but if it is Lupus, she needs care. But from one symptom and no blood tests, there is no way of knowing, Ill include the critera, I havehad it since my teens, Im 40 now. everyone thought I was off my rocker until I got super duper ill, except my mother father and husband (well I didnt marry him at 13, lol). heres the critera, mouth, and nose sores are part of the 11 critera Diagnostic criteria for lupus The following criteria are used to distinguish lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus, or SLE) from other autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. A person with 4 of these 11 conditions can be diagnosed with lupus; 3 symptoms suggest that lupus is probably present, and 2 raise the possibility of lupus. Symptoms may be present all at once or appear in succession over a period of time. 1 Butterfly (malar) rash on cheeks Rash on face, arms, neck, torso (discoid rash) Skin rashes that result from exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light (photosensitivity) Mouth or nasal ulcers, usually painless Joint swelling, stiffness, pain involving two or more joints (arthritis) Inflammation of the membranes surrounding the lungs (pleuritis) or heart (pericarditis). This inflammation is called serositis. Abnormalities in urine, such as increased protein or clumps of red blood cells or kidney cells, called cell casts, in the urine Nervous system problems, such as seizures or psychosis, without known cause Problems with the blood, such as reduced numbers of red blood cells (anemia), platelets, or white blood cells Positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) test Signs of increased autoimmunity (antibodies against normal tissue), as shown by laboratory tests Insurance or not, she meets more than two more she needs to find a way to a dr. This is a potentially serious disease, not to be messed with. In fact I personally have organ involvment, the only thing that saved my life, chemotherapy this year. she may seem ok for now, but her organs, may be affected, now a bit, or more in the near to far future, the longer she waits on seeinga dr, the worse it can be.
