Does anyone know what herbs or foods are good for someone who has lupus? Or even known home treatment.? |
My mom was recently diagnosed with lupus and had pains on her joints, muscles, and back. After taking her to many clinics and hospitals, she finally found some medication that wasn't too strong but was good enough to calm her pain. I just wanted to know if anybody has had experience or just knows if there is any foods or treatments that are good for helping with lupus. I want to be able to reduce the chances of seeing her bedridden again like she was before. Hi I have Lupus, am an owner of an online support group and one of the groups main researchers. If your looking to reduce her pain through diets and a couple of healthy non organ supplements I will post an almost finished article im working on for the group. To start, foods that are high in flavonoids are proven to be powerful anti-inflammatory foods. There are other foods, but we will start with this class. The reason they help pain, is that they help repair collagen structures. These enzymes are secreted in our white blood cells during inflammation. They also prevent free-radical damage with their antioxidant action. FRUITS Apples Apricots Blueberries Cherries Cranberries Currants-Black Grapefruit Juice (may have drug interactions so check with pharmacists) Grapefruits (may have drug interactions as well) Grapes (red) Hawthorn Berries Orange Juice Oranges (specifically Valencia) Peaches Pears Pineapples Plums (Blue, Yellow) Raspberries (Red, Black) Strawberries VEGETABLES Cabbage (Red) Onions Parsley (fresh if possible) Rhubarb MISCELLANEOUS Beans (Dry) Chocolate (Dark, Semisweet) Sage (Fresh if possible) Tea Wine (Red) OTHER FOODS, SPICES, HERBS Asparagus Celery Cucumbers Fennel (bulbs, stalks, leaves, seeds) Mustard Greens Swiss Chard Papaya Watermelon also included if you can handle spicy food, are cyanne pepper (red pepper), any chili peppers, Curris (found in Indian food) also anything in supplement containing omega 3 or 6 derived from fish oil or flax oil. the best non medication treatment, is also water exersice. the arthrise (sp) foundation can provide a listing of pools in your area that hold classes. hope this help. you can always email me. I have a ton of reasearch information on lupus. and articles written by me on research done, and articles pulled written by dr's chris E mail me for that, I will send you audio and articles to offer her hope and make sure I'm replying to you on a computer that has speakers to listen to the information. Educated minds make educated decisions. Your welcome. You are wonderful for showing such caring and concern for your mom. The best thing she can do is find a reliable physician who she can trust...a rheumatologist is best. He can monitor her bloodwork and often can tell if she is in remission or coming up on a flare and treat her accordingly. The most common medication prescribed to protect the skin and joints would be plaquenil. For flares, immediate treatment with steroids as per her physician will alleviate the inflammation most quickly. Taking calcium supplements are important also. Just wondering what the medication is that is helping her? Hope she feels well now and in the future. The best way to reduce the chances of her being bedridden is to make sure she has a good rheumatologist. Herbs and supplements can be dangerous. Things that boost the immune system make lupus worse. The drugs we take for lupus are designed to suppress the immune system. In lupus the immune system attacks the body instead of germs. This is a serious disease and should not be self-treated. You want to help. Here is what you can do. Do not make too many demands. Notice when she is tired. Encourage her to rest. Help her out with household tasks without being asked. Do not add stress to her life. Stress makes lupus worse. Let her know you understand. Tell her you love her. Do things that bring her joy. There is no set remedy for lupus symptoms. Doctors have to try various meds to see what works. It is different for each one of us with lupus. Alfalfa sprouts are bad for lupus patients, so is echinacea. The sun makes lupus worse, so does stress. |
