Question for people with lupus?

I have had lupus for over 8 yrs.I was wondering if mood swings were common for people with sle? Thank you in advance to all who answer. Also on a low dose of prednesone( sorry if spelled wrong lol )

Hi, I have had Lupus since my teens, and own an online support group. Mood swing are very very commen, escpecially for those on prednison. It can also change from day to day depending how you feel. the worse you feel, the more your mood will change. It is very natural. In Lupus It is very commen for it to attack our central nervous system, which can include, deppression, anxiety, mood swings, to the extrememe, psycosis, nerve pain, jitters, brain fog, and so much more. While mine is more stableized just through experience. I have my moments of moddiness. escpessially on a bad day or really hot days. Lupus can attack any organ, even our brains, and signals to the brain. This autoimmune disorder, is such a mystery, and unpredictable. I know so many that are happy one day, and sobbing the next. Many drs find it hard to treat these issues because there is no telling, if they are temporay, part of deppression or part of a Lupus flare or anxiety related. It's best to learn the pattern of your mood swings, and to learn the signs of if you suffer clinical deppression or not, which would include an almost daily feeling of hopelessness, and helplessness, Isolation, not wanting to go out, loss of pleasure in activities you used to like, dramatic shits from your old personality.
Yesterday I was dehydrated, so I was moody and tired, today a bit, but not as bad. I have learned in my 20 years, that if I pace myself, my moodiness, seems to be a bit better. just check yourself, and maybe keeps a mood diary for a few weeks to a month. see the pattern, if its constanst bring it to your doctors attention. Its not nice living with Lupus or its many issues.
Best of luck

WOW , Look like you got your answer and good luck to you
I've just been diagnosed 2 years ago with SLE, but I will admit to often times terrible mood swings. I have always just attributed it to the use of Prednisone. I often find it detestable just because if I miss doses I tend to break out in a rather horrid rash about my face. I know vanity is not all there is to life but I would much like to try and keep my face blemish free. I tend to get real angry and then it will switch up to being pretty happy go lucky. I never know how long these moods will last. But it gets hard for me and others around me to deal with them. I hope my answer helped out a little for you. -nicole
Prednisone can definitely cause mood swings.

Inflammation from lupus can cause mood swings as can the pain and fatigue.

Most of us life with some level of depression in the background. We have anger and no where to direct it. We are grieving the loss of health and many of our hopes and dreams. People say stupid stuff to us like "God never gives you more than you can handle" or "rest more...exercise more...get out in the sun (yeah right)...don't stress...take herbs...adopt a positive attitude...pray and have faith...God is testing you...there is a lesson for you to learn here...we all get tired...we all have pain............................. da ya da ya da. Is it any wonder we have mood swings? When you are flaring you think, oh my God what if this is the way it will be the rest of my life. When you are not flaring, you wonder when the flare will hit. I don't know many people who can live with this day in and day out and not have mood swings.
