Do any R&Sers here have lupus or another autoimmune disease? How much do you think it sucks, if you do?

I have an autoimmune problem but it is in remission these days...thanks to the lifestyle I have adopted...

A vegan diet until your immune system simmers down and then a little egg and dairy is OK. Regular exercise like walking, stress control with meditation and quiet time...I still take low dose steroid 4mg per day and it is holding me pretty well...I will try to cut down on it soon... I have not been diagnosed with Lupus, I exhibit many of the symptoms, but my mom has been diagnosed. I think that it is a terrible disease to have to suffer through. I have watched my mom slowly deteriorate over the past 10 years. More and more things keep popping up from the Lupus. Celiac Spru, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Emphysema, and so on. Her doctors have told her that ultimately it will probably kill her. I feel for those who have it and I hope that I do not. It is such a hard disease to detect as it gets confused with so many others. A friend of mine has it as well and she suffers daily from it. I hope your case is not too bad.

Saw what you asked Sybil, just wanted to add that once my mom started eating better, like cutting out wheat and gluten, and not being around a lot of toxins such as cigarette smoke, she felt some better. She started to exercise too which helped her stress level which is a huge contributor to flare ups. Unfortunately you will probably always have to be on and off steroids because Lupus really messes with internal organs.
My husband has this eye disease called UVitis which is an autoimmune disease. Man does it suck! He has had so many surgeries, and even had his lenses removed because his body attacked them thinking that they were foreign. He's been through alot, but I think he is finally at a place of manageability.
Got one too.

It's a pain in the butt.

Literally.

But at least it is manageable. I just need to be careful about colon cancer screening in the future.
I have systemic lupus with major organ involvement. In my case that landed me in hospital for 14 days with bone marrow failure, pericarditis+pleural effusions=congestive heart failure, pleurisy, and early renal failure. Got fired from both jobs, ended up on food stamps with an eviction notice3 on my door. Lived in poverty for 4 years and have now returned to work. I am digging out slowly but surely.

I am off steroids, still on plaquenil. I take low dose Cellcept chemo for maintainence. Kidneys are stable, not perfect and never will be.

There comes a time when we can stay stuck in the "it sucks" phase or we can recreate ourselves. I am also vegetarian now. I walk several miles a day, practice yoga and meditation, and have changed things in my life to reduce stress. Oh, and I quit smoking.

When people tell me that God doesn't give us more than we can handle, that only those God loves suffer, God has a purpose in this sickness, or God is teaching me something, I come close to whacking them up the side of the head. It's all too easy for people who live in the land of the well to say that stuff. They can't wrap their brains around how these diseases happen so they invent justifications.
