Does Lupus cause Jaw joint pain.?

THe doctor checked me for Jaw joint pain and said I could only take Advil. A year ago, I had the lupus butterfly rash and a positive ANA test. The rash went away and the doctor told me not to worry. Any comments about the Jaw joint pain?

TMJ is a possibiliy. We don't realize we're gritting our teeth at night. The dentist gave me Flexerel for a month to stop the inflamation.
Indirectly yes. Im Chris. I co-own a support Yahoo group, we have someone right now developing it. She never had it beore. she is getting it due to lack of sleep, sounds like she is grinding her teeth from stress, and anxiety, and when she chews, she said she is not eating the way she normally eats because she is under so much stress. Lupus affects all teh joints, muscles and ligiments in your body, escpecially under the conditions I just mentioned. It sounds like your developing TMJ. a condition of the tightening of the muscles, joints and ligiments of the jaw. If you can a dentist can give you a mouth piece to control the grinding of the teeth that may help, in severe cases surgury may needed. I had it for a few months. I calmed down, got sleep, and it went away.

But you can be having a flare in that area, stress or not. I imagine opening your mouth is painful, even talking may be difficult. It is a common problem, in Lupus, and other autoimmune disease and autoimmune like diseases like Fibromyalgia.

Talk to your Rhuemotologist again, if that is not the dr you saw, if not you need a dentist or other specialist.

here are some self care tips frm the TMJ association, plus I will provide the link:
Moist Heat: Moist heat from a heat pack or a hot water bottle wrapped in a warm, moist towel can improve function and reduce pain. Be careful to avoid burning yourself when using heat.
Ice: Ice packs can decrease inflammation and also numb pain and promote healing. Do not place an ice pack directly on your skin. Keep the pack wrapped in a clean cloth while you are using it. Do not use an ice pack for more than 10 - 15 minutes.
Soft Diet: Soft or blended foods allow the jaw to rest temporarily. Remember to avoid hard, crunchy, and chewy foods. Do not stretch your mouth to accommodate corn on the cob or whole fruits.
Over the-Counter Analgesics: Over-the-counter analgesics are helpful in temporarily reducing pain. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking any kind of medication over any prolonged period of time as indicated on the label.
Jaw Exercises: Slow, gentle jaw exercises may help increase jaw mobility. Your health care provider or a physical therapist can evaluate your condition and suggest appropriate exercises based on your individual needs.
Relaxation Techniques: Relaxation and guided imagery can be helpful in dealing with the pain that accompanies TMJ dysfunction. Deep, slow breathing enhances relaxation and modulates pain sensations.
You need to learn to relax yourself
good luck
Chris

Lupus can affect any part of the body, although the most common joint pain is in hands and legs. A positive ANA could mean lupus but lots of other things can cause a positive. I would check with your dentist.
