What is Macular Degeneration? |
I saw the add on TV but I don't know what it is. It s an eye disease that causes blindness and can be brought on from a series of different diseases., like diabetes. Macular degeneration is a disorder that affects the macula (the central part of the retina of the eye) causing decreased vision and possible loss of central vision. It is a common cause of worsening central vision in elderly patients. Funduscopic findings are diagnostic; fluorescein angiography assists in directing treatment. Treatment is with laser photocoagulation and low-vision devices. I know someone diagnosed with Macular Degeneration in their mid 30's. She did not have diabetes or anything else. She always described it as seeing a circle with the middle cut out. |
