What is macular degeneration? what is the cure? A degenerative disease of the eye... Macular Degeneration, eye disorder causing loss of central vision. The affected area, the macula, lies at the back of the retina and is the part that produces the sharpest vision. Visual impairment occurs with leakage of serous fluid or bleeding in the area. Peripheral (side) vision is unaffected. Onset may be acute with hemorrhage but usually is gradually progressive. Although some vision is retained, the ability to read, recognize faces, and drive a motor vehicle is greatly reduced. The condition is painless. Macular degeneration is a major cause of vision impairment among elderly people. Although its underlying cause is unknown, it sometimes appears to run in families. The condition is untreatable in most instances; if diagnosed early, however, its progress can be stemmed by laser treatment that closes leaking vessels. Sudden change in vision in someone over age 50 thus requires immediate medical attention. Bibliography See H. Grunwald, Twilight: Losing Sight, Gaining Insight (1999). Source(s): http://www.answers.com/macular+degenerat... (with love to my sweetie) its a form of heart disease and as far as i know there is no cure. Actually I thought it was an eye disease, which ends in blindness. One cause is the build up of oils within the eyeball (most things we eat have some sort of oil in them - even dehydrated foods). The fine organisms in the eye are too small to disperse the build-up of oils over the years. At least that's what I think it is. Sorry if it is heart disease, which would make my answer an idiotic one. its degenerative process on the macula so it can be cosed by diabetes or high blood pressure or some other conditions xx it cant be cured but it can be stopped or prevented xx nightevisions is correct. It is also known as the Bull's Eye disease, because it is literally like trying to see with a bulls eye in your direct path of vision. FYI Stephen King has Macular Degeneration. |
