If a person, age 64, develops macular degeneration, should he stop jogging? |
Jogging is so beneficial to health, I would hate to give it up unless the risk to my eyesight is substantial. Of course my eyesight is my first priority. But it strikes me that jogging just might be beneficial for macular health. Is there a good reason not to consult your eye doctor? Please, don't put your health in the hands of an amateur forum. Respect your mind and body. You must consult your doctor. (I am a physician myself and this is the best advice I can possibly give you.) No, it's a normal process of aging, you are losing your sight, see an optomitrist. no jogging shoould not bother it either way. A major National Eye Institute study (AREDS) has produced strong evidence that certain nutrients such as beta carotene (vitamin A) and vitamins C and E may help prevent or slow progression of dry macular degeneration. Jogging neither helps nor bothers macular degeneration. . visit your Opthalmologist (Eye Surgeon) regularly and use your Amsler Grid regularly and properly and report any changes noted when using the Amsler Grid. Because macular degeneration eventually robs you of your eyesight by knocking out bit and pieces of the vision,if you are going to continue to jog you need to be able to see where you are going so PLEASE PLEASE use the Amsler Grid so that you can continue to jog safely. 7yrs work experience in an Opthalmologists office as an Assistant and Surgical Scrub. The advice from the physician is correct get the oppinion of more than one doctor.Walking however is just as benificial as jogging and easier on the spine.So you may want to consider that as an alternative form of exercise even if what was told to you is a fact. |
