Is there a treatment for macular degeneration?(an eye deseas)? At present, the only widely accepted intervention for age-related maculopathy is the use of high-dose antioxidants. However, this treatment only slows progression in some patients and does not reverse damage already present. After age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) becomes exudative (wet, as one of the other people wrote), laser photocoagulation, photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin, and therapy with intravitreal pegaptanib sodium are the standard treatments to control choroidal neovascularization (a complication of ARMD). please note: the differance between dry and wet ARMD is that wet ARMD has progressed to such a degree that the choriod (layer of the eye) grows new blood vessels (neovascularization). 2 types of macular degeneration, dry & wet. Dry is worse. Yout Eye Doc should explain and presribe. eye doc, my wife has wet My mother has this and she has went in for laser treatments 7 times.She is just getting worse every day, We are hoping that she doesn"t go totally blind.She has probably 10% of her sight left.She sees nothing straight ahead. THEY HAVE DONE CORNEAL TRANSPLANTS. THE WAITING LIST IS LONGER THAN THE PEOPLE CAN WAIT AND THEY GO BLIND. my dad has this and has not been offered treatment. he says although it is a problem, he is not in pain. |
