Are there any new medical advancements to help slow or stop the suffering of macular degeneration? |
Are there any new medical advancements to help slow or stop the suffering of macular degeneration? Yes, there are some extremely expensive drugs that are literally injected into the eye itself. Early tests gave good results. Medicare is considering whether they will cover the procedures or not. I think they came up with a goodone in about 2006 (bc) maybe earlier. Smoke a joint , it influences the viscosity of the vitreous humor and slightly relaxes and reshapes the eye. Ob1 ps you also may want to check prolactin levels which can cause angiogenisis of the retina It depends on the type of macular degeneration you have. In the "dry" form it is best to take eye vitamins such as Preservision or Ocuvite...but ask your optometrist and primary care doctor first before taking/selecting vitamins. Also, protect your eyes from UV radiation...wear wide brimmed hats and sunglasses. Unfortunately, there isn't any treatment to stop/slow macular degeneration but it is usually a slowly progressing disease. In the "wet" form there is some treatment. Recently there has been reported success with the use of Lucentis and Avastin. These are injected into the eye...and with Lucentis, research has reported that some patients gain some visual acuity (lines on the eye chart). Unfortunately, wet degeneration is usually a quickly progressing disease and laser treatments are often needed. Your optometrist or ophthalmologist should be able to inform you about these recents advances for wet degeneration. Hope that helps Work for an optometrist |
