Is my dad going through the "menopause"?

My dad started getting grumpy when I was about 7, but things weren't this out of control until recently, he's notorious for rapidly switching mood now, he gets mad at my mom and me for minor reasons or no reasons at all.

For example, this morning I mentioned that I'm very eager to learn French, and he laughed if off, said it will be a waste of time, and I couldn't concentrate on my career and I will be a loser eventually. Literally, I just wanna slap his face.

He's 58 this year, Isn't this "menopause" a little bit too long?

My dad is 53 and in the midst of male menopause... His testostorne levels are waaaaaaaaaaay off chart and started taking replacement hormones... which of course now he is a completely different person and wish he never took that crap to begin with...

There is no way that menopause can last that long- maybe your father is just predisposiotioned to be "grumpy"

Have you addressed to him they way he has made you feel?
"When you said french was a waste of time I felt......" Use alot of I statements but it seems that you have been holding in how you have been feeling towards your fathers behaviors

actually men do go through their own kind of menopause. It is what is commonly known as a "midlife crisis". but you are right this has been happening for a bit too long for it to be "the menopause". It has to be something else. If his mood is having such a bad effect on the people around him then it is time yall sat down and had a talk.

Yes, believe it or not... men do go through Menopause, for men it's called "Andropause". It's very real.
Symptoms include:
Tire easier
very irritable
Blame others for things
lowering of the Testorones
Look up Andropause, it may help on how to deal with it.
Good luck!

More like mid-life crisis! All men go through this. My Dad did and he did and said many things that he now regrets. Just side step your father when he behaves this way, eventually they get over it. Trust your Mom for guidance during this time. Good luck!

don't let him talk you out of something you would really like to do.
when men get a certain age, they reflect on how different things could've been. not stuck being married with children.
like they could be driving some hot sports car with a 20 year old in the front seat.
he has issues. ignore him.

Hello Natsuko!
Men start to suffocate around 40 and this can last many years if they don't have a release valve...He needs to get out of the house more, at least for a couple of years...If he can't go for that long, maybe he should hang out with me, we'll go to the strip clubs, drink beer and smoke cigarettes...

As for learning French, I'll give you free lifetime lessons...

My Dad was the same.

So we confronted him, and I told him, if he doesn't cop on and treat us with respect, he will lose me.

He is fine now. It was just menapause. 58 is too old. Maybe he is just grumpy and needs to realise.

Well, you probably is right. You guys should see family counseling. It isn't bad to have counselor. My family have 1 and it help us.

Wow, is he your father-in-law?
You dare slap your father?
I personal opinion is no matter what he said, you could ignore his advice or take some of them, and you should show respect to your old man too.

it can be work, stress and go for French i like it i want to speak it to!!!!

Don't know if you're joking or not.
But only women go through the menopause and it's to do with their menstrual cycle.

It is Andropause.

No

LOL

It could be hormonal or it could just be work related stress. If he told you you'll be a loser eventually it sounds to me like he feels like a loser. Maybe things aren't going well for him at work or he feels like he's too old now to be as successful as he wanted to be. Maybe it's a strain paying for your education and that's why he thinks learning French is a waste of time. He may be feeling like he didn't have all the opportunities you've been given and he's made a lot of sacrifices for his family and not had any fun himself.
He may be depressed if he is having mood swings. Try to be patient with him and realize it's probably more about him than you.
P.S. Try telling your dad that you appreciate everything he does for you.
