Premature menopause or not?

I am a 29 year old female. I had a 4 month stretch of noperiod a short time back. I finally got a period and saw a gyn. He told me that I had not ovulated in that 4 month stretchof time and told me if it happened again I would have to go on hormone therapy(synthetic progesterone) to keep my period going. I have had 3 periods since this. I am wondering if it is possible to be on this therepy and have it not be menopause?? I'm 29, have hot flashes, night sweats, and moody beyond my bi-polar, and am currently almost 2 weeks late for my current period. If anyone can hlep me on this it would settle a huge disagreement with my husband. I think it's premature menopause...he says I can be on the therepy without it being menopause.

my thyroid has been checked and everything comes back normal. I am not on anything for my bipolar because it causes me to have seizures like daily so medication interaction is out. My cholesterol is low despite my being over weight and my blood pressure at the absolute highest I have ever seen it was 120/ 80 something normally it's like 90/60. I had a stroke when I was 9 years old so I cannot take the pill and my gyn knows this. I have had no surgery of any kind in the past 5 or 6 years. The only blood female relative I had died in 2001 and had a hysterectomy when she was about my age so that doesn't help either. I'm just confused and scared.

Hiya,

Sorry you are going through this. It's scary to go through all this hormone stuff so early. There could be a few things going on. Most western medical doctors' who are not educated specifically beyond their base education will not know what else to do but put you on the pill or synthetic hormones but they all have serious side effects.
First off you can demand nicely or ask strongly to have a full hormone panel done: testosterone, progesterone and estrogen. Also have an adrenal test done(saliva is the best method) to see if you are not depleted which could have a negative affect on your hormones. Then you have something to go by. There is something called PCOS, poly cystic ovarian syndrome. This can cause innovulation(no ovulation), acne, irregular periods, facial hair growth, higher levels in women of testosterone and low levels of progesterone. It may even cause obesity and be connected with higher cholesterol and blood pressure. It's a real disease/disorder that is on the rise because of all the whack artificial hormones in the environment.
Also there is the possibility that you are going through early menopause or perimenopause and will go through the peri part for 10+ years before you actually go through the finale. Find out when the women in your family went through their menopause. Or it could not be and it could be something else and your body is screaming out for help. Symptoms are a body's way of talking to us, asking for attention or rather, demanding it.
As far as PCOS, it's hard to diagnose but can be with diligence. Just be persistent and make them take you seriously. There are also natural alternatives that do not put your body in as much risk as synthetic drugs. Your doctor will know about these and you can look online about them(natural progesterone and bioidentical hormones)- Drugs are risky and have major side effects.
There are also natural herbs and supplements that can help regulate your period and reduce symptoms. Find a naturopathic doctor or nutritionist in your area and hire them to help you, find one who is versed in women's health.
Good luck!
ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: where do you live?? I can look up resources for you if you want. are you alone otherwise, do you have any support network or friends/family??? is your husband supportive, will he help without question?? is there a church group or social service group in your town?? I'm sorry you had a stroke so young, that's crazy. There must be some issues with neurological or circulatory in your body. are you under extraordinary stress or have you been through traumas in the last 10 or so years?? sometimes trauma can stress us out so much that we become sick, even burning out our adrenals. when you burn your adrenals out, you can set off a whole slew of symptoms and imbalances like hormones and moods. you can tell by adrenal exhaustion by dark circles under eyes, craving salt or stimulants like coffee/chocolate, fatigued in morning despite sleep, trouble sleeping at night, easily startled and a whole bunch others. there are natural alternatives to getting healthy. hang in there!!!

Honor yourself regardless of your husbands doubt. Those traumas are enough to send anyone into a state of depression/stress. Get some therapy for it...become your own advocate. You need to reduce your stress as it can cause all this- Try walking everyday alone 20-30 mins. :) G. L. Report Abuse

I've also had problems with my periods being irregular. usually gynos just put a woman on the birth controle pill to straighten it out, and it doesn't have to be premature menopause. but you should ask your doctor, and maybe even get a second oppinion on if you should start hormone therapy if you are worried.

It could be Stress, try to change your diet to a green one healthier, lets try not to be too negative , and think that you are healthy and really think positive your brain is very powerfull and if you worry too much you could be hurting yourself, and if you want you could get a second opinion at a different doctor if you are not content or tell your doctor to do tests to make sure.

You are way too young to be going through Menopause unless you have had Gynecological surgery in the past that maybe removed an ovary, but even then it is unlikely. You can be running low on your hormones without going through Menopause, so your husband is right. Usually your hormones are affected by your Thyroid level. Have you had that checked lately? If not, be sure to ask for the test. And also ask for a test to see if you are in fact going through Menopause, they do have these test and can tell you what stage you are in. Hot flashes are certainly a sign of early Menopause, but moodiness is not. If you go on hormone therapy, try for something more natural like Estradiol vs Premarin, from a pregnant mare horse.

Are you medicated for your Bipolar and could it be poss that your meds are interfering with your cycle? Just a thought. Anyway dont take synthetic progesterone as it is very dangerous. Demand natural progesterone which is very cheap and exactly the same composition as the progesterone that us women make. I am 40 and take it for PMT symptoms and although my cycle is still very regular my progesterone level has plummeted. I take the natural progesterone from day 14 till day 26, and it is amazing how my pmt symptoms have gone. My mood is calmer and I sleep better and it has many other benefits. Check out oestrogen dominance online and why natural progesterone is the answer.
