If a woman starts menopause at age 40?

Perimenopause http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/perimen... is the first stage of menopause. This transition can take from 2-8 years and is caused by the decline of the production of female hormones. Since every woman's hormones decline at a different rate, it cannot be predicted when a woman's last period will be. Hormones can even rise and fall during perimenopause.

"Menopause" is defined as having gone a year without menstruating.

My perimenopause began at age 38. At age 46 I'm still in perimenopause.

From what I've seen, it's impossible to even guess. Periods can stop suddenly or come and go over a course of years.

No two women are alike, but I would assume a year or so. Talk with you gynecologist for more specifics.

It's different for everyone.
