Can depo provera lead to menopause? |
I have been on Depo for about 10yrs. It was my first and only birth control method. I am now 24 and have been off Depo for 6 months now. And now, still no period, night sweats (which have been lasting for a little over a year), hot flashes (a yr. as well), and of course mood swings (which have ceased). Is this really possible for me, a 24 yr old healthy woman to be experiencing? Depo provera is an injectable, 3 month duration contraceptive. It has synthetic progesterone in it, (medroxyprogesterone) and no estrogen. It works by preventing ovulation. there is evidence that women who have been taking birth control pills have later onset of menopause. Birth control pills also prevent ovulation. There is a co-relation between the number of ovulations and menopause onset in many women. The drug has F.D.A. and Health Canada regulatory approval. Depo provera could very well delay the onset of menopause. You will require a prescription for it. Make sure your ob-gyn discusses all treatment options as well as potential side effects at that time. The Physician's Desk Reference, and C.P.S. (P.D.R. the Doctor's pharmaceutical reference text), says nothing about early onset menopause. The drug has no "toxins" in it. Check with the F.D.A. Paople should be careful about making such a serious, libelous claim and Yahoo should be careful about publishing same. (I do not work for any drug company, nor have any monetary interest in any pharmaceutical manufacturer) but I am an attorney and a physician. Doc Dan. Please rethink the depo shot. I was on it for FOUR years and it royally screwed my body up. After FIVE years you need a bone density check, that's how much depo screws up your system. http://www.rateitall.com/t-330-birth-con... it is a secondary effect of that. stop using it. use contraconeptive pills or natural birth control. depo provera is a contraconceptive of high secundary effects. i recomend that you stop using any contraconceptive method for 3-4 months until your body clean the toxines that the depo contain. see your doc. |
