Does anybody know about non-hormonal menopause treatments? |
A friend of mine has been taking premarin, but am not sure if I want to take something with hormones. Doctors have pretty much stopped giving Premarin. Maybe try the patch or ask the doctor because they have found that estrogen and other hormones cause a lot more problems than they help. I took Estrevan Extra Strength, it worked really well for hot flashes and night sweats, but it made me more tense almost snappy like PMS can. Also made me very nauseated if not taken with food. If disturbing pre/peri- or menopausal symptoms (hot flashes, crawly skin, mood and memory alterations, poor sleep quality, sexual disinterest, joint aches, depression, fatigue, palpitations, etc.) are mild, and you have some time to experiment, herbs and botanicals work approximately 50% of the time. Most likely to help are a combination of increased isoflavones (consuming increased amount of soy and other beans, flax seed, flax seed oil, isoflavones from soy or red clover sources) and black cohosh, chasteberry, evening primrose oil and sometimes dong quai in combination with other Chinese herbs (dong quai alone rarely works). I tried about everything and found no relief, but maybe you'll have a different experience. Good luck, I know it's tough. Good nutrition will help ease the symptoms of menopause by supplying a changing body with the nutrients necessary for optimal health throughout this transitional phase.Get enough calcium. A woman going through menopause needs 1000 mg to 1500 mg of calcium a day. Avoid excessive amounts of salt to reduce bloating associated with hormonal changes.
