Can Anyone Help Me Understand My Newly Irritable, Disrespectful, and Rude Menopause Mother?

I really need some help understanding my menopause mother; she is becoming something I never dreamed I would see. She used to be someone I could talk to, and now I fear a conversation with her, because she always gives snide and rude remarks, and gets snappy and irritable over stupid things. She has depression, and I do too, but I would think we could at least talk about things like mothers and sons do, like life in general. Unfortunately, I can't even do that anymore. I just don't know what to do, and frankly, it's really been getting me depressed and I feel like I am being alienated from a person who used to be understanding, and respectable. Now, I feel like there is a wide gap between us, and it's only between her and me. It seems like all this is somehow being avoided by my three other siblings, as if I am the only one getting this crap. Someone help me understand this situation, because I certainly don't. Help, before I just flip out on her and say something I don't mean.

Menopause is a *****, but it's not forever. No more periods! No more birth control!
Is she on any meds? Does she have hot flashes? The doc can prescribe EFFEXOR for those - they helped me a lot.
I used to have flashes about every 1/2 hour, all day and all night - never got any decent sleep.
Why don't you buy or borrow a book about menopause for your Mom? It will show you care about what's happening to her. If you are too embarassed, look up stuff on the net. Source(s): RN, menopausal mom
Unfortunately I also know what you are going through. However, my mother was going through menopause in my teen years so I have no memories of real conversations with her, sincere apologies, good times and laughs... to compare her (post)-menopause attitude to. I wish you luck with your mother and I know it is hard but you should try to look for the best in the situation, think of good times with her. Maybe talk with her about the good times. I wish I could help you understand the situation but it is not understandable, it is the course of nature and G-d, and sometimes we say things we don't mean but a mother will always be able to forgive her child.
There is no understanding to this problem.
