Can the Deprovera shot put you into early MENOPAUSE??????

Believe to have started menopause in early 30's. Doctors thought it was depo shot. Took shot for 10 years and ended up with ovarian tumor. Now doc saYS THAT THIS SHOT WAS PERHAPS THE CAUSE???? Ended up in emergency surgery and had ov's removed. Why aren't women informed ?????

I've never heard of that...I've been on the shot over a decade myself (I'm 42) and nothing like menopause has occured, nor have I had any odd paps.

The shot has been out a loooooooong time, with all the other possible side effects listed, if it was thought early menopause was also one of them, no reason for that not to be included in the list...

Do some research of your own, and see if you can find any add'l information on this occuring and if the shot was thought to be at fault. Sorry it happened to you...no matter what the cause.
I have no idea about any of that, but I got pregnant with my second child while on the Depo shot.

Good luck to you!
I have been on it 10 years too, no periods, good health though I recently found out my bone density isn't that great, but most likely due to poor diet growing up.

Depo shuts down your system, so your ovaries are in a state of rest...not sure if that could cause a tumor, but I have not heard of that happening before. I would think "the pill" would have more risks because of the up and down of the hormones all the time.
I thought the Depo shot could only be used for 2 years at a time. Doc told me to stop for 1 year and then start again. No problems so far. I don't think the shot caused the tumor. Doesn't sound right. How could they not inform you of that side effect. Hmmmmm. I would research futher.
Women aren't informed because they don't WANT to be informed. They just like the idea of not having to take a pill daily.
The information is out there, you can't really blame your doctor for not forcing you to do the research first.
I always research any drug a doctor suggests I take - NEVER put something into your body just because a doctor says it might work for you.
ALL pills have risks, and when it comes to your body, you should always take the time to check them out before doing something.
You took the stuff for TEN YEARS, surely there was an opportunity to spend 5 minutes googling "side effects of depot" and you'd have gotten an eyeful.
Your situation sucks, but it's not really your doctor's fault.
Ignorance is NOT always bliss
