Can taking too much of a vitamin cause menstrual problems?

I noticed that after taking a Women's One a Day multivitamin, I would start to get nausous 10-15 minutes after taking it. Even if I ate or took it before bed time. I also noticed that I went from having a regular period to not having on at all. Last period was December 18,2007 and it is now February 21,2008. I also noticed that I would have severe mood swings and cried a lot. I have since stopped taking them around the first week of this month and I have noticed a marked impovement. Is there a certain vitamin that could have caused these problems? I would really like to find some sort of vitamin supplement to take, as I may become pregnant in the near future(possibility right now!!:) and I want to take good care of myself. Is there a smaller dose I could take? Thank you for your help!

Yes a multi-vitamin can do these things to you. I am actually surprised you lasted this long taking the vitamin. I would have lasted about 3 days.

It probably wasn't too much of a vitamin that did this, but rather the compound that supplies the vitamin to you. Multi-vitamins can 20 or more active ingredients.

If you read the ingredients on the vitamins carefully you will see the compounds they use to deliver certain vitamins. Try another brand. See if you feel ill after taking them. Try to make sure at least one ingredient is different. Take a separate folic acid supplement before trying to conceive. It is this vitamin that is crucial to avoiding neural tube defects in very early pregnancy.

good luck finding a good vitamin for you!
