The copper intrauterin device (iud), does it cause problems with your menstrual cycle?

The copper intrauterin device (iud), does it cause problems with your menstrual cycle?

There are significant numbers of women who suffer some sort of complications from IUD use...

""Typical Reasons for Removal: Pain and Bleeding

Pain and bleeding are the leading reasons for removal. An FHI study involving 10,000 women using the Copper T found 5 percent had the device removed because of pain or bleeding.

While significantly better than earlier IUDs that are no longer widely used, copper-bearing IUDs cause an increase in menstrual bleeding. This usually is not a medical problem. Typically, bleeding declines after several cycles. The LNg intrauterine system, which releases levonorgestrel, reduces the amount of bleeding.
Prolonged and excessive bleeding is rare. Because prolonged and excessive bleeding increases the risk of anemia, women who experience these side effects should use iron tablets. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, may reduce pain and bleeding.""

Just remember 5 percent of 10,000 is 500 women. Source(s): http://www.fhi.org/en/rh/pubs/network/v2...
ParaGard does not change a woman's hormone levels. It can be left in place for up to 12 years.

Possible side effects that usually clear up after the first several weeks to months include 鈥?br />
* changes to menstrual flow
Spotting between periods is common with IUD use.
ParaGard (the copper IUD) may cause a 50 to 75 percent increase in menstrual flow. In some cases this may lead to anemia.
* menstrual cramps or backaches

The IUD Mirena has small amounts of progesterone, and it can change your menstrual cycle (but for the better). 90% of all users reported shorter and lighter periods, and 20% stopped having periods all together. This is the form I have, and I love it!
