Why do antipsychotics cause metabolic syndrome?

People who suffer frpm psychotic illnesses have medicines which conrol their psychosis but put on varying amounts of weight. What is the cause fo this?

Are you asking why drugs have side effects? Or why anti-psychotics have THAT particular side effect?

I dont have a highly technical answer as to *why* that side effect exists for those types of medications. Even the CPS doesn't go into that much detail, usually.

All drugs have side effects of some type. Bodies are complex structures, and drugs/medications function at the smallest of cellular levels. Anything you put into your body is bound to have some effect, will cause a change in some way.

Rule of thumb - if the side effect is causing more problems than the desired effect is "fixing", it's time to try something else.

They believe with the anti-psychotics causing weight gain, it's because of the affect they have on histamine and serotonin receptors. Not all anti-psychotics cause metabolic syndrome. Geodon & Abilify are classified as "weight neutral".
