Is Metabolic Syndrome another name for diabetes?



What is Metabolic Syndrome? Must you be a diabetic to have Metabolic syndrome? What drugs can you take for Metabolic syndrome? What tests can diagnose Metabolic Syndrome? Is diet important if you have Metabolic Syndrome? Is Metabolic Syndrome the same as being a diabetic?

No, you can be a diabetic and not have metabolic syndrome. On the other hand, diabetes is present in those who have metabolic syndrome. The American Heart Association defines metabolic syndrome as a group of metabolic risk factors in one person. They include:

* Abdominal obesity (excessive fat tissue in and around the abdomen)
* Atherogenic dyslipidemia (blood fat disorders 鈥?high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol and high LDL cholesterol 鈥?that foster plaque buildups in artery walls)
* Elevated blood pressure
* Insulin resistance or glucose intolerance (the body can鈥檛 properly use insulin or blood sugar)
* Prothrombotic state (e.g., high fibrinogen or plasminogen activator inhibitor鈥? in the blood)
* Proinflammatory state (e.g., elevated C-reactive protein in the blood)
