I.V's for migraines??

Has anyone ever been given an I.V. for migraines? If so, did it help prevent headaches? Or lessen the amount of headaches you get? What were the side effects? How often did you get the I.V.'s?

I should mention that I have a combination of Tension headaches, migraines and rebound headaches everyday for the past 5 years. The IV may sound "drastic" but the headaches are getting unbearable.

pl see what suits you.
If you are in cold country use all warm things.
Pl try cold water bath and observe if in hot country, if pain increases use warm.
If you have cough/cold body hot water bath will help.
Massage and exercise in front of morning sun is good thing, pl try.
Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief.
If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture.

There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache, Ear ache/ringing, Stomach ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes.
None of them can be treated with medicine.
Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits like dates, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.

It may disappear naturally too.

Yes. I haven't heard of a patient receiving IV medication to prevent migraines, but when someone comes into the emergency department with a migraine already happening, the doctor might order IV medications.

"IV push" is a type of IV medication that is given through an IV as a small but powerful dose, usually not much more than 5mL of fluid. IV push can be done for pain medications, nausea medications, seizures meds, etc. The benefit of IV push is that it gives medication directly into the blood stream, so the body uses it much faster than pills. The effect of the drug is so fast, some patients even describe it as instant.

Side effects of getting IV push medications include a risk for overdose if the dose is too large or is given over too short of a time.

No: ive never received IVs. I take Topamax. It is a daily oral medication for the prevention of migraines.
I take that back; I recieved an IV for a migraine b/c I was so dehydrated once in the ER and they have me Fenagran through the IV to get me to stop puking

i don't know about that, but i do know axert works great for them. :)

Migraines are sometimes caused by dehydration, so in that case, an IV would end a headache, but only prevent a headache if the person continued to take fluids orally to remain hydrated. If your migraines are caused by dehydration, then the best and safest way to reduce your headaches is to drink more fluids, specifically water.

i've never heard of it, i just use excedrin, it seems to help me a lot

Are they putting a medication in the IV or just fluids?
I had migraines for 30 years and in the back of my mind I remember 20 years ago, the doctor sending me to a headache clinic where they hooked me up to an IV with something like ergostat (it didn't work). I've also been given fluids in an IV when I have been forced to go to the ER with the pain. The idea being that dehydration can trigger a migraine and with all the vomiting they don't want a viscious circle to begin.
It sounds as if your doctor considers this a preventative measure but if they're just giving you fluids I'm not sure why he wouldn't just tell you to drink more water if he feels it would benefit you. There must be more to this. Assuming this is to prevent or make them less frequent I would ask the doctor how long you'll need to do this to see results. Whenever I try a new treatment for pain I like to know how long to give it before giving up.
wish I could be more help.
