Am I panicking? (11 yr old's migraine sarga continues)?

Hi. I have a daughter (11) who has migraines with vision problems - about 3 a week. Today she woke up with another one and also a high temperature, so took her to docs. He looked into her eyes and said - right I am going to refer you to a neurologist asap.
Why would he do that if it is "only" a migraine? Am I worrying unneccessarily?

By the way - I HAVE previously consulted the GP and was given some medicine.
My child hasnt recently moved school or home and isnt undewly stressed. She tells me everything. Lets hope it is "just" migraines and hormones!

I've had migraines since the age of about 8. I was referred to a neurologist to check everything was all right and had a brain scan to make sure it wasn't a tumour, which it wasn't but they like to make sure if they are happening a lot.

Just because he's referring her, doesn't mean there is anything wrong, they are just getting a specialist to look at her.

My parents were really worried as I would get zig zags in my vision, my left side would go numb, I would slur my words and go a bit delirious but they are all common with migraines with aura. It still happens now I am an adult but I can cope better. I also used to get them if I was stressed. Is your daughter changing schools or moving house?

I've had a few more scans and seen specialists. I think nowadays my migraines are related to my periods and hormone fluctuations rather than food although bright lights can set me off.

Your daughter's hormones might just be starting so they are more frequent.

Of course you will worry, but write a load of questions down to ask the neurologist and I'm sure they will put your mind at rest. Please try not to pass your fears on to your daughter. My parents told me I was just going to see another doctor who had more experience and I was quite calm on the day.

Good luck to you both x

Now lets not panic here. headaches are one of the last symptoms to present in cases of brain tumours. However, sight disturbance and balance are among the first and so you GP is doing the right thing by getting your daughter referred to a neurologist.
I have to say that Brain Tumours are RARE and VERY RARE in children, it is unlikely that the headaches etc are being caused by a brain tumour.
The neurologist will conduct all sorts of cognitive tests. These range from simple things like holding your arms out and bending just your elbows to touch your nose to complicated EEG read outs. Hand, eye co-ordination loss is one of the first sure signs of a brain tumour. You don't mention that your daughter has trouble finding her mouth when she eats or pokes herself in the eye when going to scratch her nose.
The neurologist may want to do an MRI or CT Scan. It's a bit scary being in those machines but you will be able to be close on hand to offer your daughter reassurance.
Of course you are worried and you want to get to the bottom of what's causing your daughters headaches and the neurologist will help to do that.
I hope I have helped.

I'va had migraines. My wife has very serious migraines. And my daughter (17) has been having migraines since she was 11. We were all referred to a neurologist as that is the physician that specializes in treating serious migraines. The neuro will find what is causing the problem such as vision, stress, anxiety, etc. His education and training makes him best at treating them. Absolutely NOTHING to worry about !!! She is getting the treatment she needs.

Hi, I started getting a lot of migranes with auras (pins and needles\vision disturbances etc) after I finished my degree (I think it was the fact the stress had gone that did it) and they sent me to a neurologist and I had a scan etc but they could find nothing wrong with me other than I get a lot of migranes, so from someone who's been there don't wind yourself up about it, if there is something wrong they'll find it but the chances are your poor kid is just unlucky and has a lot of migranes (I really hope that she grows out of them).

No dnt opanic when my wife had migrane attack same thing happened what minki said Ct scan and neurologist check up . It is normal.

BUt when she had one side face numbness and stuffy nose we consulted a ENT (Nose throat) specialist , He diagnosed as neuralgia( i may be wrong spelled) and prescribed SIBILIUM. Now she is ok one wek medicine and on week off. Try it and ask ur doctor is it ok to take sibilium for your daughter.

Good luck and God bless

A raised temperature is not normally part of a migraine attack. I expect that is why the doctors was concerned. It is better to see the neurologist as soon as possible in case there is some infection. It could just be coincidence of course....migraine plus some innocent virus infection. Better it is sorted out soon.

Every Mother/Father would be worried about there children I do not have migranes that often but all the symptons you just described i get 2 .My eyes go blurry , one minute im hot next im cold my head throbs and i have know energy she may just have bad migranes.
If u go on 2 this site you can send away for a free Migrane information pack.
Good luck and i bet your daughter will be fine hres the website :)!

No, I would be worried also, whenever there is a health problem with your child it is natural to worry, just try not to let it take control over you. Stay calm for your daughters sake, children can tell when there parents are upset/worried, you dont want her to panic, just stay calm, and go to every appointment, stay on top of it until you find out exactly what is wrong. I will keep your family in my prayers.

You should be worrying. Headaches seldom happen to healthy, young children.
I'd be worried if my kids had migraines that caused vision problems.
However you says she has 3 a week? I'm surprised you didnt seek medical attention sooner.

Hope everything turns out well. Look after her well.

I don't know, but i've had bad migraines since i was 10 (I'm 17 now) and had to be referred to a neurologist. It could just be standard procedure. 3 a week is alot though. I get them maybe once a week. I'm sure they would tell you if they thought something was wrong, try calling the doctor and ask him.

well if its happening 3 times a week it cant be good so you have every right to worry, you need to get her in to get a cat scan or mri asap bc it could be a tumor, or cist or cancer, or even meningitis it really could be anything just be careful and get her some help.

I wouldn't worry yet. It could be nothing, but it could be something. You just don't know.

For the sake of your daughter, try not to worry about the 'what ifs.' It's far too easy to do that.

well i had many of them running through ages 7-10 but they have stoped now

btw im a guy
