How can migraine headaches be prevented?

My daughter (20) started getting migraines about 2 years ago.
Are there any good preventive methods I can recommend to her? I've heard about feverfew?

Sorry but I think that is the million dollar question that hasn't been answered yet. Here are some really good sources of info on migraines that will help you

Hope this helps, I feel for her. I detest migraines as I am done for the day if I get a bad one. I've been suffering from migraines since childhood and they alleviated almost 100% with a couple things... I hope some of this helps.

During the migraine, the pain is indescribable if it is bad. The best pain killer (which kicks-in about 30 minutes after taking it) is Aleve All Day Strength. - I've tried Advil, Tylenol, Aspirin, Motrin and non work as well as Aleve for some reason. ER trips are no fun when the pain is really bad.

Preventative.
1. Diet - I was susceptible to migraines one day after eating a lot of sugar, such as candy, caffeine, and not having a good diet in the first place.

2. Hydration - make sure she's properly hydrated. Properly hydrating, alleviated migraines for myself quite a bit. Try hydrating regularly over a month and see if the migraines become less in frequency.

3. Go to the doctor and get migraine medication, I have taken two types (imitrex and zomig) but none help with preventing them. Prescription medication will help moderate some of the symptoms during the migraine, such as the nausea and hypersensitivity to light and smells.

4. Your daughter may have pre-emptive symptoms (vision, dizziness, nausea) which may indicate when the migraine is coming on. When this happens, there could have been a situation or event that happened moments before the migraine kicks. Note what she was doing/thinking when it occurs. They are often normal thought processes and she can manage them if she realizes what sets off her migraines

5. Make sure it's not from alcohol use (beer and liquor).

I have been battling migraines for thirty years now...mine started out just a few a month and then it turned into chronic daily migraine. I have been to some of the finest migraine clinics in the nation...I am finally on a regime that has given me fairly decent relief so that I have at least about 15 pain free days..sometimes more.
Feverfew is sometimes used and works for some people...you can try it and see, it didn't help me at all...it can be used in conjuction with Magnseuim (the best brand I have found is Slow Mag, from the drug store) which relaxes the vessels so they can't contract. I use about 8 a day during times when I know a headache is coming. Magnesium has helped me. Vitamin B 2 is also used in conjunction with these therapies.
Ergotomine was horrible--it makes the nausea much worse. It does help the pain somewhat but I was greatful when I did not have to use it anymore.
Be careful of pain medications, including over the counters--you risk rebound headaches.
Inderal is a daily medication which is pretty effective--it is often the first thing tried by a physician. It is a drug that is usually taken as a blood pressure medication but is effective for migraines as well because it keeps the vessels from fluxuationg..when I first took this it was extremely helpful..for several years.
Imitrex was a lifesaver for me...though I may have to take a tablet every four hours it will stop most of the pain and nausea.
As my headaches have progressed I have also started taking Topomax to help prevent them
Most any change in schedule, food, activity, sleep, weather seems to aggravate them...they are frustrating and puzzling..and difficult to cope with. Over the years mine have changed in degree and how I experience them. There are some things I know without question will initiate a headache..alcohol, oranges, Estee Lauder colgone (the old one) a change in barometric pressure, and of course, lovely changes in hormones like the beginning of a period and then the end. Ice put in a plastic bag and wrapped in a dishtowel and placed on the head and nearly freezing the throbbing area is helpful too...
and at really bad times I have had nerve block shots in the back of the skull...when they were really out of control and nothing else was working. They were effective for about 2 weeks....and I have also taken Prednisone which reduced inflammation..a last ditch effort that did work for a while..but not a great choice..that was pre Imitrex. I sure do wish your daughter good luck..I know how terrible these things are and I am hopeful there will be more understanding in the future so we don't have to suffer so! Find a GOOD neurologist..I have been to many and there are some that understand the complexities of migraines better than others..if you have a Migraine Clinic near you all the better. There is one is Washington, DC that I went to.

A deficiency of magnesium is a possible cause and in that case 200 mg of magnesium per day is likely to help.

A good magnesium supplement is magnesium amino acid chelates. Such organic magnesium supplements are absorbed much better than inorganic magnesium such as magnesium oxide.

well im 16 and i just started getting them a few moths ago, they can be a real pain, tell her not to think to much or stress out and when she has a migraine stay in a dimly lit room with the tv turned down low that she do the trick oh yh and make her take anadin extra....

I get those alot. I find that staying out of the sun helps.
Keeping cool, fresh clothing in the summer, Not tying your hair too tight. Trying not to stay on the computer for too long.
Keeping noises like t.v. to a minimun, not too loud. Going outside for fresh air is great. Drinking lots of water. Good luck!

my son had migraines. i took him to the doc. they took a test that told us that the blood vessels in his brain was too small. the doc gave us some meds and it opened up the vessels where the blood could flow. now he doesn't get them that often.

hahahah

i just read that masturbation can help..Seriously go to wikipedia and search for positive benefits of masturation ( i was bored at work one day)

is she drinking coffee? if so she should stop and she should not drink caffine, also probally some vitiamins and healthly foods could help out

If you go on the computer or look at light too much it can cause them and running i find does too

IDK, I just read that its important to know what your aura is (signs to look for right before a migraine comes on)

drinking lots of water seems to work for me

also i am sure there are pills out there to help them

You should look it up on the net for better answers.

tylenol or advil

Try ERGOT, ask your pharmacist and see a doc.
