Would magnesium supplements help for tension headaches that sometimes turn into migraines? |
I currently take a women's One-a-day multivitamin, 1000UI of Vitamin D, 1000mg Vitamin C, and 1000 mg of calcium and am wondering if I should start taking some magnesium to help prevent my tension headaches that sometimes turn into migraines. My multivitamin doesn't contain any magnesium. I will probably stop taking Vitamin C for the summer. Actually, I just remembered, I think my calcium supplements contain magnesium. So I guess magnesium supplements aren't helping me any, unless I'm just not taking enough of it. I believe it's 2:1 (calcium:magnesium.). I'll have to check my bottle to see if this bottle contains magnesium, pretty sure it does. No. It won't hurt you, but it probably won't help you either (unless you respond to the placebo effect well). If you want to prevent migraines, there are anti-epileptic drugs such as topamax or depakote that work and there are always the abortive medications like Midrin. You can speak to your doctor about these choices. Tension headaches are often relieved with ibuprofen 600-800mg and/or massage. |
