Can dogs get migraines?

Male dog, mastiff, 20 months old. Occaisionally gets problem with left eye. Holds head to left side as if in pain and whimpers. Pupil constricts. Seems to find it painful in light, seems to relieve it if cold compress applied. Squints that eye closed. No foreign object in, no irritation. Lasts minute or two, not long enough to show vet! Sleep seems to make it go away.

Anyone have similar in their dog? Is it possible for a dog to get migraines?

Diet is well balanced dog food, no chocolate ever!

Any idea???

I have a mastiff as well and she kinda did the same thing every now & then. We just found out that she has no tear production in her left eye & is now on drops. I'd recommend taking him into the vet to see if he's got a similar problem with his eye.

conffuzzled - I am not medically trained so I could be way off target. I am hoping for the best. Please let me know what happens. I too, am an animal lover. Report It

You should take him to the vet-- maybe he's got an eye infection or something (dogs get it often, especialy if you let the car windows down when he's in it)
If not... of course dogs can get migraine, they've got a brain ;) It's been theorized the reason why dobbermans are so agressive is because their skull bones are too tight for their brains, causing pressure and migraine-like-pain.
If your vet says he has nothing, ask him about what you could do to help him with the pain (I know our vet told us to give our Shih-Tsu some tempra for the pain, but being that your dog is a huge mastiff, I dunno ;))

What concerns me is his pupil changing independantly of the other. Not good!!!

He should be evaluated by a vet. It seems more brain related.

maybe he has brain worms. take him to the vet anyway.

female dogs must get headaches...other wise the world would be overrun with pooches wouldnt it?
