Crippling migraines during pregnancy??

I suffer from migraines however normally only get 1 about every six months. I've had two in the past two weeks now and the pain is incredible (roll on childbirth :o)). Normally the only thing that works is Maxalt (a triptan tablet) however I can't take that while pregnant. I've tried lying in a dark room, putting my feet higher than my head, drinking lots of water, cold compresses on my head and neck but nothing is helping, they're lasting about 3 days. I'm 13 weeks pregnant, can anyone give me any ideas what else I could try?! Thank you!

Hi. I am having the exact same problem. I useto suffer from the occassional migraine but now i'm pregnant i'm getting them atleast once a week. I've tried all the same things dark room, cold water nothing works. I take panadeine as soon as i start the feel the migraine coming on. At my last doctors visit i told them about my migraines and she subscribed panadeine forte which is safe to take during pregnancy so i try to take that as soon as i start to feel any headache coming on before it turns into a migraine. Sorry i'm not much help. Goodluck

Hormones change during pregnancy. Allergies change when hormones change. You could be reacting to a new allergy that just popped up. Most common one : Milk and anything remotely related to cows, in other words yogurt, cheese, ice cream, sour cream, and so on.

My son had milk allergies, and frequently tried banging his head to get it to explode so the pain would stop, until we figured out what was causing it. Cheddar cheese and dairy products are often associated with migraines. By the way, you can get the calcium that you need from drinking apple juice rather than milk. Ground turkey works as well as ground beef in you spaghetti sauce. Try eliminating the beef and dairy products, and see if they let up.

Sorry,I know exactly what you feel but there is something more important now cause you are pregnant .First you should inform your DR. about this now and ask her to do some blood and urine tests. When I was pregnant I thought it was my migraines until I discovered that it was PREECLAMPSIA cuz I had some symptoms too like HBP and Protiens in the urine so PLEASE call her now and share your every single symptom with your doctor cuz in these cases never trust anyone's opinions but your doctor. O.K. call her now and ask her for the solution. It is a delicate period of your life so ask your doctor. Good luck.

Man, I really feel for you. It sounds like you're doing everything possible. Pregnancy can really alter a person's body chemistry. I would suggest that you do a little research and check out this website:

Hi Escocesa. Sorry to hear about your trouble. It's made more difficult by the fact that you're pregnant, so there are some restrictions on what medications you can take. Most of them don't work anyway, whereas acupressure does work and nearly all acupressure exercises can be done when you're pregnant.

One such exercise is as follows. Find the point that is directly between your eyebrows in the indentation where the bridge of your nose meets your forehead. Press it with your index or middle finger. This spot can be tender, so press gently.

Some people do this by bringing the palms of their hands together with fingers together and straight and tilting their head downward, as if in prayer, and using the index and middle fingers of each hand to lightly touch this point, sometimes called the "third eye".

Do this for two minutes, concentrating on this point and breathing deeply. This exercise stimulates and balances the pituitary gland and relieves headaches, hay fever, indigestion and eyestrain.

Repeat this exercise every so often. You should find that you gradually get more lasting relief from your migraines.

Best of luck with the baby.
