I get migraines. How do I prevent them from happening? |
I already have a prescription for migraines but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to prevent them from happening. I take a herbal supplement my neurologist reccomended which has feverfew, B-12, and magnesium which over time has reduced that number of migraines I get. The best thing you can do is figure out what triggers them for you. Keep a journal. Right down what you eat, the weather, and your stress level (and anything else you might find important). Keep track of what you did the days you had a migraine and try to find similarities. Then you can eliminate possible causes and hopefully stop the migraines. (PS: I go to a chiropractor for mine, and strongly recommend you try one). Have you seen a Neurologist? I do. Mine has me on a medication called Topamax. It is taken daily and helps to prevent or limit the number of migraines you get. So far, my dosage has had to be increased once and right now, I am going through a pretty bad spell with a long-lasting headache/neck,shoulder,upper back muscle spasming pain. I am in physical therapy and they are sending me to a pain management center. I don't know that much about migraines but I do know that for most people certain foods can trigger them. For example, caffiene is usually the culprit; some people are even sensitive to the amounts in chocolate. I had a cousin whose migraines were set off by hot dogs (the processed bi-products). Also, dehydration can affect it. Maybe talk to your doctor about these issues? You might want to try keeping a headache journal. Whenever you get a migraine, write down what you had eaten that day, how you were feeling before it hit, this can help you discover signs that you are going to be hit by a migraine. Also keep track of any colognes or scented things you were exposed to that you can recall before the migraine happened. I added the scent part because my allergic reaction to many perfumes and scented stuff is a migraine. I suffer from severe migraines.. I go numb and my eyes go blurry, and I have medication as well.. I find that your diet doesn't have a lot to do with it.. but it does.. you could try not eating anything for awhile, when you don't have a headache, and try eating different things, what ever yo eat.. like sugar, and you get a headache.. next time don't eat sugar.. its like getting rid of something.you could also try for a CT scan, blood work, allergie tests, MRI, and other tests.. see if your diabetic.. it could be anything.. if you have another one.. I suggest you take one of your prescription pills, and lie in a dark room, no lights, or sunlight and try to sleep.. sometimes it works for me.. Erica YOG AND MEDITATION WILL HELP. Bright or flashing lights used to trigger mine. Also an overload of diary. This may be a trial and error thing for you. I'm so sorry for you. I started having them when I was 5!! They have recently started becoming far less frequent. If you are relatively young, you may just grow out of them. i know manna said this but her are some causes of migraines: stress, lack or excess of sleep, and too much caffeine and nicotine, depression, alcohol, dieting, certain foods, bright lights, and smells Perhaps reducing your sugar intake might help. See item 71 (of items 1-146) in http://www.rheumatic.org/sugar.htm . actually caffiene helps with migraines! think back when you didn't get them and think what did you add or remove to cause this. I don't know if you have tried topamax!! It works great. If not...ask your doctor about it.... |
