Is it possible for a person (women mainly) to get migraines purely because of a hormone imbalance every month?

I have had blood tests done which came back clear, I've had eye tests to rule that out, I've kept food diaries... Nothing seems to give an answer, plus any meds I've been given do nothing for my migraine at all!

Any advice on how to deal with this? It is resulting in me missing 2 or 3 days at a time at work and it's really starting to get me down and my bosses are askign all kinds of questions but i have no real answers for them as I don't know the cause.

I've tried honey, which seems to take the edge off, but seriously does nothing more than that!

I was up all night nearly on Mon in agony before i finally fell asleep through exhaustion more than anything else!

I've tried loads of pills and stuck with Cilest for over a year but I was still getting the migraines.

I get them without the pill too. It's a no win situation!

I had lots of problems with hormone-triggered migraines as well (aka menstrual migraine). My doc recommended loestrin 24 FE and that did the trick. There are 3 more active pills than most normal birth control pills and those 3 pills gradually lower your hormone level. My doc thought that it was the sudden drop-off of hormones that was causing my migraines. Migraine-free since I made the change. Ask your doctor to try it! Good luck!

It's probable. I know that migraines are a common side-effect to being on birth control pills because they mess with your hormone levels. If you're on the pill, you may want to look into the possibility that the hormone dose your getting from it is too high and/or switch brands. If you're not on the pill, maybe look into going on it as a way to balance your hormones better.

Some people's migraines are triggered by hormones, unfortunately. I had a friend who also had them.

I just wiki'd it and got this (since it is wikipedia, it's not exactly perfect, so take with a grain of salt":

"Menstrual migraine

Menstrual migraine is distinct from other migraines. Approximately 21 million women in the US suffer from migraines, and about 60% of them suffer from menstrual migraines.
* There are two types of menstrual migraine 鈥?Menstrually Related Migraine (MRM) and Pure Menstrual Migraine (PMM)
* MRM is a headache of moderate-to-severe pain intensity that happens around the time of a woman鈥檚 period and at other times of the month as well.
* PMM is similar in every respect but only occurs around the time of a woman鈥檚 period.
* The exact causes of menstrual migraine are uncertain but evidence suggest there may be a link between menstruation and migraine due to the drop in estrogen levels that normally occurs right before the period starts.
* Menstrual migraine has been reported to be more likely to occur during a five-day window, from two days before to two days after menstruation.

When compared with migraines that occur at other times of the month, menstrual migraines have been reported to

* Last longer鈥攗p to 72 hours
* Be more severe
* Occur more often with nausea and vomiting
* Be more difficult to treat鈥攐ccur more frequently"
