Migraine medication question? |
Why is hydrochlorothiazide used sometimes to treat migraines? High blood pressure can cause headaches and I suspect it is a factor in migraine headaches, too. Headaches may be among the first symptoms of hypertension, or high blood pressure. This headache is often located at the back of the head and is usually noted upon arising in the morning. The pain is throbbing or pulsating. This headache is worsened by exercise, straining, or stooping, since these activities raise blood pressure. For most patients, treatment consists of medication to lower the pressure, and a low-salt diet and weight reduction when indicated. This is probably why you were given hydrochlorothiazide (or HCTZ). HCTZ is first line therapy for patients who have mild or moderate blood pressure. It's used for blood pressure and sometimes blood pressure issues can aggravate migraines. I have no idea. Sometimes codeine is used as well and it can actually make a migraine worse. |
