Migraine Medications? |
I am searching for a new preventative medication for my migraines. I would like to know what meds any migraine sufferers are on, if they actually help, and what side effects they cause. I have tried Topomax and Cyproheptadine with no luck. Make the connection....This is the best headache info. My migraines are triggered by MSG and chocolate. I avoid these and manage to generally avoid migraines. If I have too much citrus foods or juices it can also bring on a migraine. When a migraine first comes on (for me it's the flashing lights or loss of vision and numbness in my hands) I take two disprin direct and lie down in a darkened room and in another hour take another two disprin direct. These dissolve in the mouth so they're straight into the system. Usually this stops the migraine turning into the full on nasty pain and vomiting. I used to get such debilitating migraines that I would literally be down (on the couch, no light, no noise) for days. I stopped drinking so much caffeine ( I usually only drink a diet coke in the am now instead of coffee) and cut out chocolate for the most part. I also try not to use anything with artificial sweeteners. Believe it or not but when I feel like one is coming on I take 2 excedrin migraine and then another 2 an hour later (my doctor said this was ok for me based on the dosage of the prescription meds I had been taking) if I still feel like it is coming and I haven't had a full blown migraine in 7 years! Have you kept a journal of your diet and your migraines to see if you can find a food that may be triggering the headaches? Apple cider vinegar is supposed to help for the prevention. Tricyclic antidepressants can work. This is the family of medicines like Nortriptyline and Imipramine. |
