Non stopping Migraines for 6 weeks?

The past six weeks I have had migraines that never end. At first I was diagnosed with a sinus infection and was given two different types of antibiotics to cure it. Then the pediatrician sent me to get an MRI when the pain still didn't go away, which came back completely normal. I went to see the neurologist and she put me on a perscription dose of Alleive, which doesn't help. (neither does excedrin, tylenol, or ibprofin) I am going back to the neurologist on Friday, and I have been to the eye doctor and nothing is wrong there, and the dentist and they don't think it is my wisdom teeth but we are taking them out anyway. In the past 6 weeks I have probably only been to school 7 or 8 full days. The rest are either half days or I am not there at all. I would like to know what is causing these headaches and how to stop them, and how I could get on home bound schooling. Thanks! Oh and I am diagnosed for having migraines and I am on topamax.

Hi Dani,

I've been a migraine sufferer myself and I know that it can be so debilitating. 6 weeks of migraine is something that I would be VERY worried about if it were me.

From your initial question it looks as if you have tried a number of things to get relief, in my experience often doctors are a little unsure about what causes migraine, and without this information it can be difficult to stop an attack and to prevent another one from coming on.

For me, migraines have been bought on by stress, dehydration and muscle tension in my upper back and shoulder area. To find out what is causing migraine, it will be worth keeping a diary of what you eat and drink, how high your stress levels are and what sort of migraine attacks you get. In addition to this it is worth noting what medication you take and the effect or lack of, on your pain.

Looking at your diary, you can then start to notice when your attacks are worse, and think about what sorts of food and drink may be making things worse.

If you really can't see any pattern, take this diary to your doctor. They may be able to see something you are missing. Now I notice that you mention that you have been seeing a pediatrician but you may be better off seeing a neurologist about this.

A number of things can trigger migraine, and it is so hard to say for someone else what that thing is. Be persistent and patient, you will get there. It may be stress, it may be dairy, it may be chocolate, it may be food additives or it just may be plain dehydration.

As for your school work, have a talk with the Principal of your school or the person who looks after your education and I'm sure that they would be more than happy to help you with work to catch up. Just explain what has been going on, and that you are unwilling to fall further behind.

To help with your journey to recovery, get in contact with other migraine sufferers, I have listed some websites below.

Good luck, I know you will find how to control your migraine. I hope that you find it quickly.

You are not alone for constant migraines. my fathers friend, his eyes quiver constantly from migraines.

I would suggest not worrying too much, keep away from stressful situations. Do some eye exercises. Rub your temples. Deep breathing exercises. Don't smoke or drink alcohol or substance abuse.

Avoid fast foods and asian foods. Don't watch TV, for more than 3 hours.

Edit - I suffered from a "headache" at the back of my head for several weeks. Someone suggested a chiropractor. I went and was cured! Perhaps you should go to a chiropractor since you've tried everything else. Look at this site. You can email Michael Black and he can advise you even if you are not in the same country.

I have migraines and take Imitrex with no other pain meds for my headache. If you take other meds such as excedrin, tylenol, ibuporfin along with your migraine med you will get "rebound headaches"Taking tylenol or other pain killers more than a couple times a week can actually cause worse headaches over the long term. That sounds exactly like what you're suffering. It may take a month or two of no painkillers until the rebound pain subsides. What you need to do is see a headache doctor, probably a neurologist, to get on a preventative medication. There are lots of different preventatives, each with their own pluses and side effects -- you need to talk with a doctor to discuss your best options. Good luck! Hope this helps.
