Can Multiple Sclerosis drive you insane?

clinically speaking.... can the damage done to your brain from Multiple Sclerosis drive you insane? or to behave outrageously without control?
thank you.

just want to add that i was diagnosed with MS about 5 years ago, just feel like i am losing my marbles sometimes. my mood swings are so bad, even with medicine from my neurologist. just wondering if anyone had a similar experience with diminished mental health and MS.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~clinical info~~~~~~~~
MS is not a fatal disease for the vast majority of people with MS. Most people who have MS can expect to live a normal or near normal life span, thanks to improvements in the treatment of symptoms and in other therapies for people with MS.
8. Does MS change over time?
Most people are diagnosed with the relapsing-remitting form of MS. Over time, some people in this category develop secondary-progressive MS while others may have mild attacks but do not worsen. They are considered to have benign MS
Other Problems As with physical problems, the types and severity of cognitive problems vary considerably from one person to the next. Some people may experience emotional changes due to neurologic changes in the brain, such as suddenly bursting into tears or laughter without feeling particularly sad or happy. Some people also report brief periods of loss of awareness or feelings of disorientation.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nervous system disease that affects your brain and spinal cord. It damages the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects your nerve cells. This damage slows down or blocks messages between your brain and your body, leading to the symptoms of MS. They can include
Visual disturbances
Muscle weakness
Trouble with coordination and balance
Sensations such as numbness, prickling, or "pins and needles"
Thinking and memory problems
My uncle has MS, and I can tell you secondhand that ANYTHING that devastating has to cause some sort of mental pain. I don't think MS causes mental illness first-rate, but possibly as an outcome of the disease itself. Honestly, when I saw my uncle try to move 10 feet, it was brutal. It took him about 20 minutes just to walk this distance. Just from that, how could somebody NOT go insane from this disease?
It also depends on how one copes with it. Some people take it rough, and wish that they were never granted the wish of life. Some try to take the positive out of what they got, which is the ideal way of going about it. Though, this is easier said than done.
Absolutely NOT!
No, it will not drive you insane, but mood swings as you're experiencing them do happen. It is often difficult to determine how much the mood swings are caused by damage done to your brain and how much are caused by the fact that you are dealing with a severe illness.
My suggestion would be to talk to your neurologist/doctor about the medication you're currently on and also see a phychologist or a therapist who can give you some tools on how to deal with the mood swings.
All the best to you.
I have had MS for two years now and I see a psychiatrist. All my friends who have MS also see a psychiatrist for medication to help them to stabilize their moods. I have never ever heard of anyone becoming insane from MS. Your neurologist is not a specialist in mood disorders and he/she should be referring to a good psychiatrist and psychologist. Some studies have linked MS to manic depression but it seems that most people with MS seem to suffer from depression. Having your neurologist treat you mood swings is like hiring a plumber to fix an electrical problem. I am very sorry you are having a difficult time. I attend a support group for people with MS and find it very helpful. Perhaps that would help you out as well.
