Is multiple sclerosis dominant or recessive? Any experts there?

I have a project. Thank you.

We are constantly learning more about MS. MS is an autoimmune disease. The genetics part is that a parent may pass on the predisposition for an autoimmune disease to their child. Doesn't mean it will be passed on. Doesn't mean that if it is passed on that anything (like a virus) will ever trigger the autoimmune response.

The general population has <1% chance of contracting MS. The chance increases in families where a first-degree relative of a person with MS has the disease. The chance increases in families where a first-degree relative has MS to 1-3%. An identical twin runs a nearly 30% chance of acquiring MS whereas a non-identical twin has only a 4% chance if the other twin has the disease.

Here's a easy to understand article http://www.medicinenet.com/multiple_scle...

It's not actually purely genetically based. For example, if one identical twin has MS, the other twin also has it only about 66 % of the time.

There are multiple genes involved in having a susceptibility to MS, and the exact dominance characteristics are as yet unknown. It is also proposed that some genes may be sex-linked, because most studies show that significantly more women get MS than men.

I'm not any expert by any means, but I believe that there's no specific MS carrying gene. MS is a disorder that is linked to genetics, but no one is quite sure how, as it seems to be a disorder with a complex mode of inheritance.

So basically, scientists/researchers right now think that MS is caused by a bunch of genes that, by themselves, have no link to MS. But, for some reason, when a person gets a certain combination of these supposedly harmless genes, it leads to MS. Some people also believe that your chances of getting MS are greater if you smoke or have had a serious viral infection.

I just heard that vitamin D is related. that is why further north locations have more MS. I dont know if there is a gene
