While the medications for MS are designed to keep the disease at bay, there is certainly no guarantee that you will not have a flare-up which is usually referred to as an exacerbation. No one can predict what course your MS will take. Some people go for decades without having problems while some have attack after attack. MS is a very unpredictable disease. The good thing is that it is not fatal since it does not affect the major organs. And despite having the disease most of us lead a relatively normal life. I have had MS for twenty years now. I still work, go to the gym three times a week and lead a pretty active life. Some of my symptoms return and some don't. But everybody has a different experience with the disease.

When I was first diagnosed, I ordered a lot of literature from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to read up and find out what to expect. I also went to peer led meetings held by the society to get educated. It is a good idea to know all you can about this disease. I also do research from time to time to find out what other treatments are available to help me. My doctors first put me on Copaxone. I later found out about a drug called LDN (low dose naltrexone). I am doing far better on the LDN than I did on the standard treatments for MS. Educate yourself so that you can make the best desicions for your own health. I have learned that doctors make decisions that are best for them and not necessarily the best for their patients. Doctors are not Gods and they make plenty of mistakes. They all have biases too that serve their own purposes. You need to be your own best advocate. The very best of luck to you!
