Multiple Sclerosis how is this diagnosed?

I have been getting really dizzy lately and my left arm shakes all the time. Now every once in a while my body kinda jerks. Does this sound like M S. If so how is this diagnosed. Some times I feel good and sometimes I feel like crap. I just want to know whats wrong.

Hi Barbara, neurologists use an MRI (magnetic resonance image) to diagnose MS. They look for the tell-tale brain lesions which are scars left when the immune system begins attacking the myelin which coats the nerves. In addition to that they may also do a spinal tap and/or evoked potential response to confirm the diagnosis.

The symptoms of MS mimic some 25-30 other diseases and conditions so MS is never diagnosed on the basis of symptoms. In addition, multiple sclerosis is relapsing/remitting in the beginning so it often takes years to get diagnosed. Lesions and the organic material from the breakdown of myelin take time to show up on the brain and in the spinal fluid respectively. This can further hamper the diagnosis.

The only way to find out the source of the problem is to see your doctor. The very best of luck to you.

eeg can detect epileptic activity due to lesions. mri sometimes shows it but not in early stages. though many things can cause dizziness and so getting a physical is a start.

Your physician can diagnose it.
