What do you think is the cause for the explosion of Multiple sclerosis in this country?

MS has often been linked to a lack of Vitamin D. Places farther from the equator, and there for less sunshine have higher populations of patients with MS. For instance, Wisconsin has an instance rate of 1 in 500 people where Texas is only 1 in 5000. Environmental triggers are a big thing for MS, you must carry the gene and then have the environmental trigger to bring about your MS symptoms.

Both my husband and his brother were tested extensively to rule out a gluten allergy, lupus, RA, Lyme's disease, STDs and many other. They both have markers in their spinal fluid and lesions on their brain visiable on an MRI.
I live in WI, both my husband and his brother BOTH have MS.
I don't know where you live? But, I can tell you that there is a theory for those of us living east of the Mississippi: because of the large concentration of population in the midwest and east we are exposed to huge amounts of pollutants from industry and diesel burning vehicles. In NW Ohio our cancer, Parkinson's, and MS rates are extremely high. In fact, there is a federal team looking at the area surrounding Clyde, OH and it's neighbor, Green Springs, OH. In the last several years 11 young children have died of cancer in that area. In NW Ohio we have thousands of semi trucks and trains rolling through every single day. Can you imagine the amount of diesel fumes being sent up into the air?
There is no way to know...here are some books that have very interesting info on all sorts of diseases...

3 books on disease symptoms and treatments

you could also get these books on ebay or amazon or a half price book store. (last two are very similar)..
1.Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine
2.Handbook of Diseases (Lippencott)
3.Professional Guide to Diseases (Springhouse)

I knew a lady with MS who slept in cold weather (cold?) with the windows open and drank a lot of the dry creamer(additives?) in her coffee and smoked(tobacco has lots of chemicals incl. I read that it is sometimes treated with arsenic to keep pesicides off it ) ...
I knew a guy with MS who was a professional golfer (they touch the grass alot and golf greens use a lot of fertilizer and pesicides on the grass)..
Some people theorize that their parents protected them too much from germs (with too clean environments) and so they didn't develop the same immunity as kids who got childhood diseases in childhood...
I agree with the first poster also..if you live near a factory or trash burning power plant, etc...that can't be good...
Lots of theories..no set solution or any one thing that you can point to...
Another theory on some celiac websites is that almost every disease is undiagnosed gluten allergy...
