What can I expect for results of MRI? Doctor circled "code 340 - Multiple Sclerosis" on info sheet...

I'm scheduled to take an MRI for the first time on Tuesday morning... I've been given three pills that will put me to sleep during the entire process (which will be an MRI on both the spine and the brain). I rarely feel pain (even though I've felt it a lot more often lately in the muscles behind my lower legs and upper arms -- as well as stiffness and pain in ankles, fingers, and toes).

The doctor asked me to take three information sheets back to the nurse for the scheduling of the MRI. He circled Multiple Sclerosis on all three and didn't even tell me about the MRI on the brain -- he just said "this will be a long MRI on your spine..." When the hospital called to verify the appointment, they told me he also scheduled an MRI on the brian. How long can I expect this to take and, provided this is MS, how long will it be until he informs me? The next appointment with him isn't until November 18th and I still have blood work later this week...

You can count on being there for at least and hour and a half if not longer They should do an MRI on Head and c-spine With and with out contrast.
You might have to take more test down the road to confim the diagnosis,if it is MS But remember Doctors will and do test to rule out things as well as confim so dont get to worked up over it stay calm... Multiple Sclerosis is not and wont be the end of the world ..

If he circled that, he probably just left himself a note that the test was performed. That's all - just as a record that he tested for MS. Doctors wouldn't randomly circle diagnoses on a sheet, without saying anything to you.
call the doctor before the test to ensure that you fully understand the instructions.
Your doctor may be trying to rule in or rule out MS. He has to have a reason for the insurance company to pay for it. He's made this decision based upon what you've told him. I agree, you will probably be there for about 90 minutes.

He may call you on the phone when he gets the report from the radiologist with some information. You may wish to ask for the appointment to be sooner than November 18th.

Depending on the results of your MRI, the doctor may have you have a spinal tap--also known as a lumbar puncture. All of the test results will help your doctor to best help you. Good luck.

Why don't you call your doctor and ask him these questions? His nurse might also be able to answer some of them or call you back with the answers. It is job to keep you informed so do not be afraid to approach him with questions. After they do the MRI, someone who is qualified to determine whether there are any lesions and whether those lesions are indicative of MS must read them. Doctors and hospitals have policies as to what kind of news they will deliver to a patient over the phone versus delivering the findings in person at an appointment. And the time when your doctor will deliver the news all depends on his schedule.
My MRI of the brain took about an hour so if they are doing the spine also 90 minutes would be about right. And don't be disappointed if you do not get a definite diagnosis. The tests do not always come up with anything conclusive. I know this whole process is very rough on the nerves and I certainly hope that you do not have anything serious. Even if it is MS any physical signs of disease could take months or years to show.. Very frequently it takes more than one MRI and more than one type medical test for the doctor to arrive at a decision. My doctor sent me for an MRI and gave me the bad news in his office at my appointment two weeks later. I had previous MRIs but they showed nothing. However, once they told me they suspected that I had MS I read everything about it and came to the realization that I had it long before they gave me the news.
