How does Osteopathy differ from Naturopathy? |
How does Osteopathy differ from Naturopathy? Osteopaths, chiropractors and MDs are physicians. Naturopaths are not. You can have a doctor of naturopathy but that is not a medical degree and for the most part, its not even a licensed profession. All three of the above are licensed under laws having to do with the practice of medicine. All three have a legal duty to act as a primary care physician (the difference is in the scope of practice for the treatment, but not the diagnostic, part of being a physician). Naturopathy is not in this category. First in most states (including Arizona) a doctor of Osteopathy(D.O) is given the same status of a Medical Doctor (D.M). A doctor of Naturopathy ((D.N.) ?) while respected is limited on what medical prescriptions they can prescribe (especially controlled substances, such as coedine) . Naturopathy use herbs and natural substances to heal. Osteophathy is the movement of various body systems working together. Personal experience Osteopaths are trained doctors. They are just as qualified to practice medicine as a traditional MD. One of the finest hospitals in the country is the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where there are Osteopaths (D.O. degree) in almost every department. Osteopaths do have specialized training in muscles and bones, in the fashion of chiropractors, although most D.O's hate to be compared to chiro's in any way. A naturopathist claims to be able to treat or prevent disease "naturally," often through herbs and such designed to strenghthen the immune system. Who know? Some of what they do may help some people. But there is no *science* behind it. No "double-blind" trials, no rigorous testing, etc. Nauropathic medicines can sound pretty weird to non-believers. They often include ingredients that provoke the actual thing the medicine is supposed to protect against. So a stomach remedy might contain a stomach irritant. Their thinking is that these medicines help the body's immune system react more strongly, so there is a sort of rebound effect. Maybe, but it all smacks too much of the same sort of thinking that leads people to drink more in order to put off a hangover. Whatever floats your boat, I say, but it is not my cup of (herbal) tea. these two are totally different.osteopathy deals with the science of setting bones after fractures or injury while naturopathy is much wider, deals with natural remedies for all the possible conditions affecting human being and includes diet,exercise,herbs,minerals,y... Osteopathic Physicians (DOs) are on the same level as Allopathic Physicians (MDs). They have very similar schooling and Osteopathic Physicians can enter the same training programs as Allopathic Physicians. DOs are known for their somewhat alternative view to medicine and that it was more based in the link between mind and body relationship in health. DOs also have a philosphy based in treating the whole patient and not just the illness. You wouldnt notice the difference between the two, unless you were seeking a physician that practices Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, based on the idea that the musculoskeletal system has an effect on health. THEY ARE NOT SIMILAR TO CHIROPRACTORS. DOs can be licensed to practice in all 50 states. Outside of the US, Osteopathy takes on a different meaning and are different than US osteopathic physicians. Naturopathic physicians (NDs) are not the same. They do not have the same privileges in medical practice that MDs and DOs have. They are most concerned with naturally based medicines and treatment. As of today, there are still many states within the US who do not have licensing laws for NDs. Naturopathic Physicians can be considered more alternative medicine practitioners than Doctors of Osteopathy, which can be considered more mainstream, if somewhat unknown. Naturopathy is drugless system of treatment based on fundamental laws of biochemistry. According to naturopathy the root cause of disease is congestion of waste toxic material and wrong eating habits or disturbance in metabolism. These disturbance results in breakdown of homeostasis, this leads to disease. Hence, main aim of treatment in naturopathy is correction of metabolic process and excretion of waste toxic material. Thus tries to maintain homeostasis. osteopathy is quite different from naturopathy |
