Cat Nutrition and Health: (Raw Feeders)?

If Kidney Disease, kidney Failure tend to run in some breeds of cats, (for one the Siamese breed). If you want to try to prevent it in the first place, WHY? can't you feed your cat a kidney diet to begin with? Why, wait till symptoms appear. (it is usally too late by then). I'm talking about Raw Feeders here, Not commercial food feeders.
Is it because the kidney diet would be too low of protein or etc... for a non kidney prob. cat?
Thanks, God bless. Been pondering this for a while now.

What you are writing here is strange. Raw by nature is high protein and many vets now believe that it is not the amount of protein fed but the quality. People feeding dry food any ties are feeding vegetable based protein instead of animal
Some crf patients are transitioning to a raw diet and any are having good success.
If you are talking about feeding a low protein diet to prevent kidney disease, you are just asking for trouble. Cats are obligate carnivores and need animal based protein to thrive
For quality for a carnivore, you want to feed a grain free diet as many cats have trouble with grains and the carbs that come from them. They haven't done any studies on cats about this but if you look at this study with dogs which are omnivores, yoiu would think this would apply to a carnivore
This report is for dogs but applies to cats

Also for health
The Merck veterinary manual [www.merckvetmanual.com] says that cats need "4 g of protein of high biologic value per kg body wt/day". That's about 7 calories from protein per pound body weight per day. If a cat isn't a good eater and consumes, say, 20 calories per pound per day, then 7/20 = 35% of calories can safely be from protein. It must be high quality protein, which means meat, fish, milk, and eggs, and not grain or soy. Are you making your own raw?(I assue so) If you need links on making your own don't hesitate emailing

There is no "kidney diet". Cats need quality meat protein all their lives. Yes, you would be depriving your cat of heathy nutrition to reduce the protein in her food.

I rescued a 15 yr old cat and she ate nothing but a raw meat diet for the seven years she lived with me. Of course she had "kidney disease" and she did beautifully right up till the end.

You can probably find a copy of "Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs" by Don Hamilton, DVM and read his chapter on "General Care for Kidney Failure". My library system has some copies.

The food is specifically designed for pets who already have the disease and it gives them the special medicine/nutrients it needs.Would you take medicine if you weren't sick? If you get your cat checked regularly at your vet if symptoms show up you'll be in the minority of cats treated in time.

The reason high protien kibble isn't good for cats with kidney problems is because the kibble pieces have no moisture to balance out the protien. Raw is different and it is mostly moisture.
